What people are saying about Beach House’s Depression Cherry & “Sparks”:
Depression Cherry backs down from the weightier, live-drum take on dream pop that comprised Bloom. Still, it’s the most cinematic work they’ve ever made—both in sound and lyrical imagery—so much so that it borders on sci-fi at times, which makes sense considering one of the band’s only concrete professional ambitions at this point...On Depression Cherry, Legrand not only possesses more range in her vocals, she experiments with spoken-word mind control on Lennon-tinged highlight “PPP” and employs eight singers from Hattiesburg, Mississippi’s Pearl River Community College for a 24-part harmony that makes album closer “Days of Candy” the most dramatic Beach House song to date.” [Feature] - Pitchfork

“A winding, reverb-heavy new song” [“Sparks”]  - Spin

“Gorgeous.” [“Sparks”]  - Pretty Much Amazing

“In typical Beach House fashion, it sounds like if you somehow had a glass of sunshine and poured it over yourself until you melted away into a puddle of shimmering emotion.” [“Sparks”] -Noisey

“It's the perfect example of a band searching without losing sight.” [“Sparks”]  - The Line Of Best Fit

“Mountains of fuzzed-out guitar riffs, droning synth lines, and infinite vocal layers” [“Sparks”] - FLOOD Magazine

“The song is a dreamy, shoegazing pop anthem built on mid-tempo drums and a thick haze of synths and guitars.” [“Sparks”]  -Exclaim!

“A dreamy, swirling wall of sound, with the electric guitar providing all the necessary sparks.” [“Sparks”]  - Pigeons & Planes

"'Sparks' has the band sounding more distorted, more off-kilter, and maybe more like MBV than they ever have before" [“Sparks”]  -Brooklyn Vegan

"Spacious bed of sonic blankets" [“Sparks”]  - Billboard

"How masterfully they make the whims and errant sonics of shoegaze conform to their polished, if dreamy, sound "[“Sparks”] -Nerdist

"The Baltimore duo tweak their dream-pop sound, tumbling down a psychedelic rabbit hole with distorted  guitars and killer industrial loops.” [“Sparks” / Hot Midsummer Jams] -Entertainment Weekly

“...For all of its gauzy, dream-pop bliss, Beach House is still the kind of band that deserves a close listen. Fight the temptation to get lost in Legrand's dulcet voice and give this new song from the band's upcoming record, their first since 2012's Bloom, your full attention.” [“Sparks”] - Vulture

“Pulling from the past while looking resolutely into the future.” [“Sparks” / Best New Track] - Pitchfork

““Sparks” initiates with indiscernible muttering. Its an intricately woven loop of samples that mimic the moments before waking up, as an echoing voice from the outside pulls you up and out of slumber and into waking consciousness. In this song, that voice comes in the form of an unhurried, steadfast guitar motif that expands what could be a claustrophobic re-introduction of the band into something wide open and incandescent.” [“Sparks” / Song of the Week] - Stereogum

asperity (æˈspɛrɪtɪ) noun (plural) -ties
1. roughness or sharpness of temper
2. roughness or harshness of a surface, sound, taste, etc
3. a condition hard to endure; affliction
4. (physics) the elastically compressed region of contact between two surfaces caused by the normal force
“I was thinking about the concept of difficulty. Whether in life or in nature - of conflict, of being troubled. The idea of friction. Also in geology, an asperity is some part of a fault line that doesn't move that can create an earthquake, which is an evocative concept.”
Asperities is the fourth solo album by acclaimed Canadian cellist Julia Kent. As the title suggests, this is a record born of conflict: internal, personal and global. Universal themes. The build of pressure and the threat of violent release. Modern guilt. Modern fears.
Kent draws from a rich well of emotion, the pieces deceptively rendered, each feeling like a miniature dramatic epic in its own right – sculpted and self-contained. Her work on recent film scores is very much in evidence. While cinematic in scope, there is nothing as trite as a Hollywood ending here. There is tension and darkness, the edges cracked and frayed. “A lot of the melodic material is based on semitones,” Julia elaborates. “So in the music there is an inherent sense of dissonance; that things are too close for comfort. More generally, it seems like a particularly dark time in the world right now, and I think that definitely had an influence too.”
The album was recorded, produced and mixed in its entirety by Julia in her New York studio. This method of working lends the record a sense of isolation that carries a powerful resonance in our modern over-connected world. “I really like the autonomy of working alone,” she says. “I feel that I can transmit something emotionally that I might not be able to if there were someone else involved.”
Utilising looped cello, electronics and found sounds, Kent creates a world where the technological and the organic merge in perfect symbiosis, the layers of sound peeling back to reveal a beating, bloody human heart at its centre. “I did quite a lot of processing of the cello sound and used different electronic textures,” she explains of her technique. “I was trying to get away from the acoustic cello sound and find one that was more textural and more expressive of the material.”
Throughout the plaintive strains of opener ‘Hellebore’, the prowling grace of ‘The Leopard’, the elegant restraint of ‘Heavy Eyes’ and onto immersive closer ‘Tramontana’, Kent’s cello evokes romance and loss, a yearning for simplicity. This is the soundtrack to the transitory nature of life and the inevitability of death.
Vancouver-born and New York-based, Julia Kent rose to prominence with Rasputina and Antony & The Johnsons. Her extensive résumé includes recent work with SwansAidan BakerRachel GrimesRutger ZuyderveltBarbara MorgensternLibrary Tapes and Khan of Finland.
Kent has also composed extensively for film, theatre and dance. Her cinematic work includes the documentaries The Boxing Girls of Kabul and RwandaL'Impossible Pardon, American feature A Short History of Decay, short films Doppio Urlo, and the award-winning Oasis. Her music also was used in Paolo Sorrentino's 2011 film This Must Be The Place. As a solo artist she has toured extensively in Europe and North America and performed at festivals including Primavera Sound, Reeperbahn, Unsound, and Meltdown.

The Mynabirds third full-length album,  Lovers Know, is out today via Saddle Creek. Having premiered on NPR Music, the record is now available to purchase via the label’s website and iTunes. The band will be hitting the road next month in support of the release and a full list of tour dates are available below and on The Mynabirds’ official website

Led by Laura Burhenn and produced by Bradley Hanan Carter of Black English, the album explores influences of 80s, 90s, and futuristic soundscapes, while recalling Kate Bush, Sinead O’Connor, Jesus and Mary Chain, and My Bloody Valentine. The result is arguably one of Burhenn’s most personal and confessional works to date, yet also her most accessible, delving deep into universal themes of love, loss, and seeking connection. The first two singles from the album are “ Semantics” and “ Wildfire” which are now available to hear and share on  YouTube

“Love – or the lack of it – is the thing we all have in common,” notes Burhenn about the themes weaving together the new album. “It can destroy us. It can break us open and let the light in. And it’s also the thing that can make us sing.”

Sharkmuffin Exclaims “Tampons Are for Sluts” on Jezebel

LP Chartreuse Out Today

“Badass New York punks…” - Jezebel

“On their debut LP Chartreuse, Brooklyn power-punk band Sharkmuffin show that they have mastered the craft of heavy, unapologetic, sharp-pop songs.” – Impose

“It’d leave you breathless if you weren’t humming along.” NPR

“…catchy garage rock jams with a pop edge” – Noisey

“Brash and unapologetic…this is a vicious band with plenty of teeth.” – Consequence of Sound

“…visceral, explosive, sharp and a little dangerous” –WNYC's  Soundcheck

“ Draws inspiration from bands like The White Stripes, The Ronettes, Nirvana, and Hole.” -Flavorwire

The “no good lush[es]” of Sharkmuffin have released a new video for their debut album   Chartreuse today on Jezebel The Brooklyn noise punk duo’s new video for the song, “Tampons Are for Sluts,” involves balloons, a lot of booze, and karaoke. Through its deliberately ironic title, Tarra Thiesson slurs about the voyage of a party queen struggling with the type of romance that can only thrive in those dark, thumping cellars called bars.

Sharkmuffin’s debut album Chartreuse is out now on State Capitol Records and Little Dickman. The album features drumming from Patty Schemel (Upset, Death Valley Girls, Hole) and marks a whole new era in their style of music. The noise-punk-meets-psychedelic power pop group has evolved their sound on the new album, and the result is a full length filled with ten tracks of commanding hits.

More about Tijuana Panthers and POSTER:

The Tijuana Panthers are from Long Beach, a great band, staring at the sea, staring at the sand...POSTER is their latest album.

POSTER? As in Post Punk? Post Surf? Post Cowpunk? How about post any wave that has come and gone and will come back and go again? Post all that. How about putting the 'post' back in posterity?POSTER is another great record by the TijuanaPanthers! Not just for posterity's sake - for RIGHT NOW!

Earlier Tijuana Panthers albums were urgent - as if cranking out the hits was objective number one. They cranked out the hits and they did it true. From point A to point B. But POSTER is the Tijuana Panthers now, at their most confident and present minded. They have arrived. They've stepped out of the past or future and into the now. Go back if you must to revisit the hits, butPOSTER is now, I say! There is no longer a race against time.

On this album the hit feeling is all around you. They are exploring the time and space of that feeling. Sounds come and go, maybe to return, maybe not. This is the Tijuana Panthers freed from the tried and true structure. They have freed themselves only to be trapped again and again, in this moment, making noise, stretching out, letting odds and ends fall where they may. After all, this album was recorded in just two days! No time for fallacy! No time for façade! POSTER is but a moment to be lived and continually re-lived! What else do we have? Truth itself?! All I know - and can ever know - is this moment now, POSTER, apartment windows opening and closing, lyrics passing like ads on buses, tones swelling and crashing through breezeways...
