The reviews are in. The second album by silver-plated songstress Cate Le Bon, CYRK, is a bona fide critical hit. The cavalcade of comparisons that crop up in every review - John Cale, Nico, Malkmus et al - give you an idea of the regard in which Le Bon is currently held.

So it is with great pleasure that we can announce the Welsh artist is releasing CYRK II via The Control Group. During the CYRK sessions, back at the dawn of 2011, a grand total of 15 songs were recorded. As they began to form as finished articles they naturally pooled into two camps. Whilst CYRK bounds around erratically and unknowingly like a younger sibling, CYRK II is its older sister, bearing songs of a more starkly confessional nature. Although there is a longing and sadness that litters CYRK II, it never truly realizes itself, often hiding in the forest of lyrics and interrupting instrumentation when on the cusp of revealing too much.

CLB ended 2011 with a 2 month stint supporting America’s finest guitar destroyer Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent. Her time on the road fostered a confidence and assuredness that is evident in Le Bon’s stage presence: with dead-eye stares, guitars held aloft, and the kind of voice that could sink an iceberg, this really isn’t one you want to miss…

So don’t, to coincide with the release Cate Le Bon returns to North American for her second headline tour of 2012, including a performance at Pop Montreal where she’ll share a stage with with Stereolab’s Laetitia Sadier.

Bio:

A highly successful 2010 was spent touring her debut LP Me Oh My described by Word magazine “As cymbals clash and keyboards whirl, imagine PJ Harvey’s rawness tangling with Super Furry Animals’ prog and a vocalist who forgoes folk soft asides for delicious black humor”. Cate then ended the year contemplating and conjuring up her sophomore release.

Cate entered the studio with the nucleus of a record existing in her head, lyrical ideas swam in ether as did fully formed arrangements, but it wasn’t until she began recording that these disparate ideas were drawn together and her circus tent of a record rose from the gravel ground.

Drawing on her experiences from that heady 12 months, Cate created a collection of pop nuggets that sounded like they’d fallen off the back of a broken carousel, imbued with the playfulness of Faust, Syd Barrett and the tropical melodies of Os Mutantes and stitched together with a foreboding silken lyrical thread.

Existential word play abounds and fuzz fused guitar lines tear through like an angry bee in a CAN as Cate muses on matters of the heart and the magnetic pull of the ocean.

What’s a song on your new album, CYRK, you really want people to hear?

‘The Man I Wanted’ because I have finally put down a wooden recorder track that I have not been ridiculed for… as of yet. Also, if you’re listening to it, you’re well into side 2 of the album which means there’s hope you’ll make it to the end.

What’s a lyric you’re particularly proud of on the album?

“On the worst day of his life, he’d still love more things than I like” has been misconstrued as being a melancholic lyric about how miserable I am when actually it was written as a testament to how wonderful and positive the ‘he’ in the song is (it's not God, for the record).

How does time work anyway? Did you know that 2008 is as much yesterday as yesterday is? 2008, that was when it began - a sweat young thing boiling up out of the mythical swamps of ooze and grooves. Ty Segall was just getting started, his need to rock was ordering itself into existence. Now it's just four years later, a mereness in terms of evolution, and already, there are singles everywhere, plus a couple comps, a live album and mostly, five swinging, smashing studio albums paving the way for this modern superhighway you're gonna call Twins!

Ty's a dog, he can't walk backwards and go back and be the manimal who made those old records. That's why we thank the gods of pressings plants and sleeve fabricating facilities for preserving those revolutions. Now today, today is where the energy is. The monster energies of Twins do not recall Melted anymore than they take the trips of Goodbye Bread all over again. The Lemons-ade is all drunk down. Ty Segall is a new man, a different kind of man from his knuck-draggin' earlier incarnations. It's like the 2001: A Space Odyssey-monolith came to visit him (on the set) one bright morning. And now he's jetting toward Jupiter, brooding, looking at man with x-ray eyes, yearning with a superhuman heart for a love to come and stay.

Los Angeles based band Deap Vally are excited to announce the release of their debut single, "Gonna Make My Own Money," on Ark Recordings on July 31st. The song is a raucous and energetic blues rocker with an infectious chorus that puts this all-girl group on the map as heirs apparent to the throne left vacant by West Coasters Sleater Kinney and Bikini Kill. The band also released a video for "Gonna Make My Own Money," directed by Pablo Balderas. The video's style fits the song perfectly, presenting a hazy day-in-the-life aesthetic to what appears to be a scorching day in Los Angeles (is there any other type?), complete with lighting reminiscent of today's retro Instragram-style, car rides, and breaks to swim in the pool. Bringing rock-hard grit and all-girl soul from the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles County, Deap Vally is made up of the howl of Lindsey Troy and the rhythm of Julie Edwards. Together, the duo break blues down to its simplest, most fundamental form: beat, melody, and meaning, while their scorching live shows are fast becoming the stuff of legend.

Deap Vally first met at a needlework class - yes, really - last year. Bonding over their crochet hooks with a love of the blues, first demos and videos of the girls' live shows have been cropping up online with increasing frequency over the past few months, playing w/ Soundgarden at Hyde Park in London this summer, and they've even caught the ears of one Josh Homme, whose Eagles of Death Metal invited the girls to open for them in LA.

Ernest Borgnine RIP 1917-2012

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ERNEST BORGNINE

January 24, 1917 it begins virtuous. He has a bad day at black rock. Parents of the law out of the labyrinth of the forest. He dies within the fiery walls of The Poseidon. He dies for a fervid love. He can’t live without her. Without Ernest, the body transforms into a morass of debris, toxic commodities unrelated to meaning. Here, take it. Grasp it. This is the tactile future, and virtual transgression cleans all.

Travel to the end, journey to the center of the earth. Ernest is the pilgrimage’s limit or its sex, the second fiddle to whoever has the war face, the basement jaunt of the world. “You may know where dreams come true....” His new movie. And “new” movie means everything. I was the cowboy who marched on the red plains of Tunisia. I am the cop who hijacked a rebel satellite.

New York City is my prison and I’m its cab driver. He lived in Milan. But no one who drives a cab is from America. An over-achiever. A cowboy of capitalism. Squarish patterns of grimy plaster, pitted opening / chess moves. The way for a true homosexuality next to the fake ones depicted on Channel 11. The noon bell rings repeatedly. And there are beautiful boys in the alley sucking each other. They eat and drink, swallow and Ernest is in leather. It’s late, after the depraved clubs have closed. No one pays any attention to them. They exist in that space in skull I call “nowhere’s ville.”

Beautiful eyes are filled with tears. Ernest lowers his head into that quagmire of sores and latent tendencies. He’s on equity wage, he has a family. News has come of his father’s death, crucified in the mountains of Albania. He is erect and feels the rise of testosterone on the planet. Distended endings. Advertisement of addiction.

The opaque surfaces of Ernest’s cheeks. The billboard goes up, a new movie, a way of thinking is arranged. I said a “new” movie! Let’s fight this war, and let’s get laid. We have our ugly wives, army groupies, and young boys who love to fuck. Short, twisting, aggressively, between two alleys, the sight of the boy’s face.
