SINGLE ART | PHOTO: CJ Harvey Today, Canadian singer-songwriter Elissa Mielke releases her new single “Lemon Tree”, a tender reflection on the uncertainty that lingers after a love story comes to an end. Produced by Grammy nominated Philip Weinrobe (Big Thief, Adrianne Lenker, Lucinda Williams), the song opens with warm twangs of pedal steel played by country steel legend Russ Pahl (Willie Nelson, Elton John, Kacey Musgraves) and soft drums as Mielke’s tender vocals revisit a memory through confessional questions, retracing the details of a relationship and where it went wrong. Built around a series of increasingly specific memories and imagined explanations, the song turns the familiar post-breakup impulse to comb over details and insecurities into something both wry and deeply human. Mielke asks whether it was a gesture, a missed moment, a shirt, a kiss, or simply some unknowable distance that made the relationship impossible. As the song unfolds, that obsessive self-questioning gives way to something more liberating: the relieving decision to stop searching for an answer and move forward. Earlier this summer, Mielke released her single “Don’t Have to Hate You”, a contemplative celebration of finding power in letting go, the track finds Mielke turning away from resentment and toward release, pairing a breezy, upbeat arrangement with confessional songwriting that explore the long afterlife of a relationship. That same confessional spirit carries in “Lemon Tree”, but it is presented in a way that reveals not only Mielke’s musical versatility, but also the conflicting emotions that come with moving on. As the song circles through intimate memories and repeatedly wonders “why?”, there is a rawness in her tone that speaks to the heart of her artistry, allowing vulnerability to be translated into something universal.

Mielke first drew attention for her powerful vocals and stripped-back songwriting on her 2021 EP Finally, which earned praise from Pitchfork, who described her voice as “an immense ocean of an instrument” and highlighted the directness and emotional clarity of her writing. Uproxx noted “her ability to pen rich and introspective songs” and Exclaim! crowned her an “Artist To Watch”. Since then, she has continued to develop a body of work that moves between folk, indie rock, and intimate singer-songwriter traditions, balancing vivid lyrical detail with understated arrangements.
