(June 5th, 2026) - Chicago’s own multihyphenate artist Sparklmami releases her debut album, in this body, via Verve Records / slowplay. Sparklmami first welcomed listeners into the world of her debut through the impactful 2024 singles “fajas” and “running,” offering an early glimpse into the vivid emotional and sonic universe she expands on throughout the album, including recently-released singles “no te vayas” and “quisiera”.
In this body is driven by Sparklmami’s own imagination. She mines her psyche and spins up surreal imagery to make sense of childhood memories she looks back on with a refreshed adult perspective, each serving as a portrait of a moment in her life. Those stories unfold through a dreamlike soundscape shaped by the generational and cultural music that colored her upbringing — from the glimmering jazz of 1970s Brazil to the Mexican boleros that radiated through her home growing up. Expansive and free, the album moves like a radio dial scanning through the soundtrack of her life, serving as a meditation on identity and the familial, cultural, and geographic influences that shaped both her and her art.
That atmosphere of openness and vulnerability shaped how the album was made, enabling Sparklmami and each member of her band to improvise and bring ideas to the table, building songs together symbiotically. Eddie Burns (Executive Producer, Drums), William Corduroy (Executive Producer, Bass), Alec Trickett (Percussion), Josh Jessen (Keys, Synths) and Kenneth Leftridge Jr. (Saxophone) were all involved in bringing the music to life, guided by Sparklmami as the album’s audacious conductor. She also enlisted a wider musical community for the album, including instrumentation and contributions from the likes of Nico Segal (The Social Experiment, Neil Young), Alex Santilli (Thee Sacred Souls), Raphael Olivier (Etienne Daho, Yael Naim, National Jazz Orchestra), Adlai Reinhart (Shawnee Dez) and Chris Misch (Metro Boomin, Gunna, Bobby McFerrin).
It was revelatory for Sparklmami to merge the freedom of improvisation with her love of visual art while working on the live graphic score. Prior to making music, she earned her BFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago, where her work explored memory and identity through dioramas of her childhood home and green screen recreations of the telenovelas she watched growing up. As she leaned further into the spontaneity of live performance, Sparklmami carried her visual practice with her. Previously released singles “no te vayas” and “quisiera” were both accompanied by visuals directed by Sparklmami herself, continuing to build the immersive world surrounding her music.
Sparklmami’s new single arrives following her recent shows opening for UK powerhouse songstress Joy Crookes and Spanish star rusowsky in Chicago. She’s also playing a slate of new live shows this Summer, including a hometown show supporting Patrice Rushen as part of Chicago’s Millennium Park Summer Music Series. Sparklmami will also be playing headlining dates in Brooklyn at Baby’s All Right and in LA at Moroccan Lounge, as part of Jazz Is Dead, this July.
