Pearl & The Oysters, the Paris via Los Angeles duo of Juliette Pearl Davis (Juju) and Joachim Polack (Jojo), will release their new album Monkey Mind on June 26th.
After wildfires raged through LA in January 2025 and Trump’s second inauguration loomed, Juju and Jojo felt extreme panic and anxiety, their “monkey minds” at full speed. The fires threatened not just the city they now call home, but the network of friends and collaborators they had built around them. As a way of dealing with terrifying events, they began writing their new album, Monkey Mind that very night.
Though Monkey Mind’s subjects are serious – the apocalyptic devastation visited upon LA, the states of mind that ensue – new single “Lights Out” is about the importance of finding joy amid the chaos. This might be the Knicks’ season, but “Lights Out” celebrates Jojo’s newfound love for the LA Lakers. A power pop / AOR song, it’s Pearl’s take on “the magnificent loser anthem” – think “Born to Lose” by Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers and Steely Dan’s “Deacon Blues”
The track’s images and lyrics are loosely inspired by basketball, but here “lights out” is spun on its head, meant not to refer to the 1980s Showtime Lakers dynasty, but rather to function as an ode to the eternal loser archetype. Joey Dosik of Vulfpeck – himself a regular national anthem singer at NBA games and lifelong Laker fan – contributes a roaring saxophone solo. Like the rest of Monkey Mind, the track was produced by Jonathan Rado (Weyes Blood, The Lemon Twigs, Father John Misty), recorded to tape with minimal overdubs.
Directed by Ambar Navarro, the video for “Lights” Out” sees the band “monkeying around”, inspired by 80s photos of chimpanzees dressed up in children’s outfits – unplugging a giant, fun size plug, eating bananas and literally turning the lights out.
Monkey Mind is out this Friday 26 June! Don’t miss their US, UK & EU tours later in the year.
