(April 8, 2026) - Today, Kuru shares their latest single "Noir kei" and unveils the release date for their sophomore album, Backstage hologram, out next Friday, April 17th. "Noir kei" follows their lead single from the project "FW19". They've detailed their new album with meticulous creative direction, teasing a track list that includes features from xaviersobased, katmoji and Lucy Bedroque.

DMV-via-NYC rapper and producer Kuru has been the catalyst for major change in the online hip-hop landscape since before they could drive. Now 20 years old, a decade's worth of passion has led them to a crystallizing moment for their solo career with this sophomore record. Kuru's style, attitude and focus form the pillar they've meticulously constructed for themselves, standing apart from the rest of the underground hip-hop landscape on their own terms.

Kuru's light beams on their sophomore album, Backstage hologram. With a Lain-esque technoromantic flair rooted in inspirations as wide as Hikaru Utada and IDM, Backstage hologram is one of the most realized, fine-tuned exhibitions of this decade's distinct strain of hip-hop borne from the internet. Their exquisite production has an industrial edge, emerging from a fascination with their Japanese cultural roots and an upbringing spent online. It's the culminating project of a life spent understanding and mastering the digital landscape, brought together by captivating hooks and sharp regional DMV flows.

Kuru has always stood out amongst their peers as an artist with remarkably refined songwriting uncommon to most self-taught musicians of their age. They first began making music in 2019, garnering buzz with early tracks like "clueless", "typo", and "resolve" -- autonomously realized songs, presented as rapid Soundcloud drops. With recent releases like "2door", "my Baddd", and "wakeup" finding their own success', along with Kuru's production scattered across xaviersobased's acclaimed project Xavier, it is apparent Kuru has no intention of slowing down. Their collaborative efforts comprise a rolodex of Soundcloud's most cutting-edge producers, along with artists like Lucy Bedroque, jane Remover, xaviersobased, and Hi-C. In addition to music, their passion for the arts extends equidistant into fashion, having modeled for Yasuyuki Ishii, as documented by British Vogue.

After finishing high school early, they had foregone the pursuit of an audio engineering degree in order to focus on their career as an artist full-time. Instead, Kuru moved to NYC upon graduation from high school and partnered with longtime affiliate deadAir. Together they released the debut album re:wired in 2024. The project earned them a 7.1 rating from Pitchfork, with the outlet hailing it as "a panic room crammed with miseries, victories, betrayals, realizations, and music so dreamy it somehow sounds idyllic." The freewheeling “Stay True Forever” followed the next year, a tape that acted as a bridge between their debut and sophomore album, further refining their sound and setting it up for Backstage hologram’s pristine output.

What Kuru brings in the way of Backstage hologram’s signature characteristics—romancing chaotic digitally-inclined hip-hop into the sublime—a feeling that originally peaked through the cracks of their acclaimed 2024 debut album re:wired. This body of work brings the aesthetic characteristics of DMV trap, Japanese ambient, high fashion, and a whole host of other influences into one cohesive experience. Kuru’s sophomore album proves to be a gleaming example of an artist's limitless ability to grow and use their experiences to create something breathtaking.
