MARCH 18, 2026 [New York, NY] – “My soul is this album, there for the taking,” says acclaimed Canadian singer-songwriter, guitarist, and composer IMAAD WASIF about his new album SUPERCONSCIOUSNESS which is released today via his imprint Voidist Records. “This album is huge for me. It embodies my hope, my pain, and shines a light on my many contradictions. It is a lens on my disillusionment with the world and a record of personal upheaval that could have easily swallowed me up.”

If he sounds deeply invested in this album aside from what you would expect from an artist releasing a new album, it’s because Superconsciousness truly occupies the depth of his soul. An album born out of a desire to repattern his pain, traumas, and tragedies, it’s not too far of a stretch to say that it saved his life. After being displaced by the 2025 Altadena (Los Angeles) wildfire while in the throes of personal upheaval, it took every ounce of his being to complete such a gorgeously layered and hopeful record. “Music for me is the only power that I have, so I’ve chosen my way,” he says. “This is what I can do for the greater good. I can only hope that my efforts are not futile.”

Bearded Gentlemen Music understands his struggle, saying “Superconsciousness is an essential transmission for the disillusioned, and Imaad Wasif is your all-knowing host…  It’s the sound of a man sifting through the wreckage to find the ‘god-spark’ that didn’t burn.” FLOOD Magazine calls the album a “multidimensional exploration of sounds.” American Pancake points out “its classic beauty [is] part hymnal, part Americana, part rebel rock, part blues meets gospel meets pop Western noir.”

The pastoral elegance in Wasif’s songwriting lies both in his lush melodies which he received handy assists from inimitable musician friends Heather McIntosh (Neutral Milk Hotel), Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Dylan Fujioka (Meatbodies), and Garrett Ray (Vampire Weekend) and his exquisite poetic phrasing of his lyrics.

Wasif’s current single “We Are Hunters” is a contemplative stunner which he explains “starts off floating in a web of narcosis and then plummets at light speed like the man who fell to earth with its pounding heartbeat dragging me along for the ride. The payoff feels like a revolutionary act of joy.” Los Angeles alternative flagship station KCRW says of the song, "'We Are Hunters' begins as a raga meditation and unravels into something far more feral, part Sonic Youth haze, part spiritual excavation. There's tension in every note, a push and pull between transcendence and the weight of being human.”

Believe,” the first single released from the album, is a fragile beauty of a song, a twinkling elegy marked by a mesmerizing piano arpeggio which opens up into a Jesus and Mary Chain-esque fuzzed out climb which Austin Town Hall likens to “peeling back an orange, and with each revelation, a new sensation takes hold of the listener, blossoming into this powerful emotional pull that will keep you coming back.”

An album brimming with strikingly beautiful songs, Superconsciousness finds Wasif in a burst of melodic creativity. “I’ve fully gone rogue,” he explains. “I’m operating outside of the systems that I once knew. Somedays, I feel that I’ve been swept away in the rising tide of what honestly feels like a blood red sea.”

Instead of being engulfed in the difficult times of current events, he chooses to dig deeper to find the light within. “What can I do as an artist but throw myself into the creation of something with positive force, something that can possibly incite change and trigger a lasting resonance,” he asks himself. “I had to go so deeply into myself to come out with this album and I’m presenting it now, not as an enlightened being but as a person on his path to a greater awareness. This is an album for TRANSMUTING DARKNESS.”

Produced by Lewis Pesacov (Julius Eastman, Wild Up) who previously mixed Wasif's previous release So Long Mr. Fear and mixed by Derek Coburn  (Chelsea Wolfe, Spoon), Superconsciousness blends early electronic influences, layered rock, and what Wasif calls goth-folk. “There were 34 songs at one point,” he recalls. “I wrote and recorded everywhere - hotel rooms, my house in L.A., at Bobb Bruno’s studio. Something about the haze of sleeplessness that comes on like a druggy film-it snags images and ideas from a distant but familiar place. When you can’t tell dreams from reality, that’s my hallowed ground.”

With a career that spans collaborations with Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Lou Barlow, and fronting L.A. underground slowcore legends lowercase, his seventh album further cements his position as a visionary whose music expands beyond genre restraints. Fully realized and meticulously composed, its ten songs hold a warmth that feels familiar yet entirely new.

Blending elements of minimalism, goth folk, Indian ragas and post-punk with psychedelic and exploratory guitar playing, Wasif has created a wide body of work that includes numerous projects (psych-rock mavericks alaska! and writing songs with Karen O for the soundtrack of Spike Jonze’s Where the Wild Things Are).
