Deltron 3030 is opening up the vault. To mark the 25th anniversary of their landmark debut, the group is releasing a new documentary, Making Deltron 3030, alongside a deluxe 4xLP box set presenting the full album and instrumentals in a newly expanded edition. Earlier this year, the trio performed the record front-to-back on a 27-date North American run — a tour that sold out 20+ shows and reaffirmed how deeply this album still connects. Directed by longtime collaborator Jacob Rosenberg, Making Deltron 3030 digs into how the record came together — the early sparks, the mythology, and the way three artists with totally different backgrounds ended up building one of the most imaginative hip-hop concept albums ever made. Dan the Automator, Del the Funky Homosapien, and Kid Koala walk through the process firsthand, with appearances from Randall Park, Zane Lowe, and Damian “Domino” Siguenza adding perspective on how the album took shape and why it still resonates. |
Jacob Rosenberg adds: “I’ve known Del and Domino for nearly 35 years. I met Dan back in 1999 on that fateful night when he first heard the Del track ‘Cyberpunks’ in my car, which started the wheels spinning for Deltron 3030. I have such reverence for the artistry of that record and I wanted to unpack the mythology and details behind how something so special came to exist. I had a few visual elements in my head before we even began and like he describes, Dan pushed and allowed us to explore what became the right tone for the album’s story. It’s an inspired record, so I feel that everything that springs from it grows in a special way. To accompany the film, the 25th Anniversary 4xLP Box Set expands the original release across yellow, magenta, green, and blue smoke-colored vinyl, housed in a 50-page hardcover book with complete lyrics and liner notes / essay from award winning writer, poet Hanif Abdurraqib (Go Ahead In The Rain: Notes On A Tribe Called Quest). The set includes both the full album and a complete collection of instrumentals. The trio built out a universe that felt cinematic and strangely prophetic, pulling in contributions from Damon Albarn, Prince Paul, Peanut Butter Wolf, Money Mark, Paul Barman, Mark Bell, Sean Lennon, and Mr. Lif. Even with a lean discography, Deltron 3030’s influence has only grown, shaping artists across hip-hop and beyond for nearly two decades. A third Deltron album is currently in development. |
