November 14, 2025—Rock legend Billy Idol is joining forces with three-time Academy Award-nominated composer J. Ralph for the new original song “Dying To Live” from the forthcoming documentary film Billy Idol Should Be Dead. The song is out now as it appears in the film’s coda sequence, featuring imagery—both animated and archival—from throughout Idol’s life and storied career; watch/share the video HERE.
“Dying To Live” is performed by Idol & J. Ralph and written by Idol & Ralph alongside longtime Idol collaborators Steve StevensTommy English and Joe Janiak.
Idol notes, “It’s quite something watching a documentary about your own life. Seeing the landscape of my story all laid out inspired me to want to write a song for the end of the film that brings together what I saw in the film; all the strands of my life really. It was thrilling to work together with J. Ralph. Symphonic music has a unique cinematic authenticity, we felt this was essential to capturing the range of emotions the climactic moment of the film called for.”
J. Ralph adds, “The vision was to create a cinematic finale for the film built around visuals and a thematic orchestral piece featuring Billy’s voice and a string quartet. Composing the song inside this sonic universe reveals every nuance and vulnerability of his vocals and lyrics in a way he had not yet expressed in his previous work. He was totally up for it and brought the same rebellious spirit and fearless energy that defines his life and the very essence of punk rock.”
Billboard recently named “Dying To Live” a top contender for the Best Original Song Oscar, while The Hollywood Reporter praises “Idol’s warm vocal delivery alongside the swelling strings and light piano lines.” The track is currently nominated for Best Song-Documentary Film at the Hollywood Music In Media (HMMA) Awards, which also nominated Billy Idol Should Be Dead for Best Music Documentary-Special Program.
Directed by three-time Grammy-winner Jonas ÅkerlundBilly Idol Should Be Dead is a feature-length documentary tracing the life and career of the punk pioneer turned rock ‘n’ roll icon. Through never-before-seen archival and personal interviews with Idol, his family, peers and collaborators, the documentary digs deep into his emergence as a prototypical punk rocker, his meteoric rise as a global superstar in the MTV era and the myriad of challenges Idol had to overcome to not just survive, but to remain one of the most beloved figures in rock n roll, almost fifty years into his career. The film made its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival this summer and will be in theaters and available via streaming services in early 2026; additional details to come shortly.
