JULY 23, 2025 (New York, NY) – “It's the lazy days of the modern dystopian world that keep us going,” says Phil Galloni, mastermind behind indie pop project WAVERLY DRIVE. “It’s this impulse that motivates us to forget our cares and go on a drive blasting the radio with a friend or loved one... or go to the beach on a whim, just to forget everything for a brief moment.” This devil-may-care-while-the-world-burns-around-us sentiment fuels the sunny, New Wave banger “Lazy Day,” his newest single from his upcoming album DECADENCE which comes out independently on September 16, 2025. Reminiscent of John Hughes soundtracks of yore, like Pretty In Pink, Sixteen Candles, and Some Kind of Wonderful, “Lazy Day” bottles the bright pogo pop of the ‘80s and propels it forward with modern production values, creating a song that feels trapped in time while remaining fully modern.

The inspiration for ‘Lazy Day’ was pretty mundane... just feeling lazy on a day in the studio and wanted to create something that feels ‘classic’ Waverly... a sun drenched, uptempo song that feels good and is poppy, but not in a traditional pop way,” Galloni explains. “I told my bandmates after writing it that it's close cousins with ‘Darlin’ and ‘Callin for Nothin’ from our first EP, but leans a little more towards the impressionist side that I love in a lot of music.”

Gorgeously cinematic in a way that viscerally builds an image consistent with the bright tones of the song, he sings, “And I don't wanna wait up all night / When I got this feeling inside / I don't wanna wait all night / When I need you by my side,” with sense of urgency that is universal, yet so personal, an image of an impulsive Summer romance to catch a fading sunset.

“Lazy Day”’s simultaneously released b-side, “Gates of Eden” continues the apocalyptic theme that runs throughout the album… a bit more sobering but no less romantic. “This track is inspired by the narrative of the album… reflections on a dystopian world where nothing is as it ever seems, he explains. “In this song, we find the protagonist standing guard at the Gates of Eden, looking to his closest love/friend/etc. and asking, ‘if everything comes crashing down around us, will you still be there for me?’.”

As the opening track on the full album, “Gates of Eden” carries a more dynamic and propulsive rhythm, darker in tone and message, but no less instantly infectious.  “It sets the stage for the album's themes in the opening lyrics: ‘I never told you what I really thought / And now you got me standing guard / At the Gates of Eden / Where the stakes are high’,” he expresses, pointing out the slightly more serious tone. “It serves as a contrast to many of the previous Waverly releases that were carefree songs and material.”

This diversity of song styles aligns itself with the variety of notable musician friends who helped Galloni record the album. “For example, Chris Valentine from [LA-based electronic band] Magic Wands did guitar on ‘Gates of Eden’ which brought his magic into the mix and gave it a very distinct sonic touch.” Attributing the sonic shifts also to his diverse taste in music, he adds, “I also think the variation is attributed to the variety of influences I've listened to over the years. I am always trying to create something new to keep it interesting and fun for myself and the listener... Every time I write something new, I try to do it in a different way or approach, which seems to create a large range of songs.”

One of the fortunate means that he’s able to experiment with new sounds and styles is that he owns Voltiv Sound, the celebrated recording studio in Los Angeles. Explaining how he’s able to record without worrying about conflicting studio rental or tight budgets, he says, “I never am on a time constraint and also have a small setup at home, so am able to work on songs for new ideas when I want to. I also think just the variety of equipment and gear I've built up over the years gives me a lot of possibilities that some artists don't have. I feel very lucky.”

A studio engineer/producer and multi-instrumentalist, the Los Angeles transplant (he is originally from Chicago), Galloni released the debut EP Living in a Fantasy in Nov 2022, EP2 Now I Know in July 2023, and EP3 Push My Luck in May 2024. Evocative of the breezier side of indie rock, new wave, indie pop, and electro pop realms, his early releases found him a critics’ darling, having had ink devoted to him in The Line of Best FitThe 405Clash MagazineDeli MagazinePost PunkMystic SonsPsychedelic BabyGood Music RadarWe Write About Music, and more for his work as a solo musician and producer/engineer for others. During his time as sole proprietor at Voltiv Sound, Phil has worked with countless musicians/bands, including Magic Wands, Monica Martin, Cassidy Place, Family Company, DPR Cream, D’Arcy, Joe Sumner, Hey Boy, and many others.

Several studio musicians contributed to LP, including Chris Valentine (Magic Wands), Alex Kyhn (Macy Gray, Family Company), Egan RiceRuss Mitkowski (French Montana, The Weeknd), Cary Lane (Wild Party), Dexy Valentine (Magic Wands), and Kathrene Gawel (True Vacation). Songs written/recorded/mixed by Phil Galloni and mastered by Steve Hall (Tom Petty, Flaming Lips, Madonna).

WAVERLY DRIVE's new album Decadence is due out independently on September 16, 2025.
