Today Cigarettes After Sex’s "Apocalypse" has become one of just under 200 songs in history to surpass 2 billion streams on Spotify. In addition, last week three of their other tracks - “Cry,” “Sunsetz,” and “K.” - each surpassed 1 billion streams on Spotify all within a stretch of just five days. They also are now one of only 11 bands in history (joining the likes of Fleetwood Mac, AC/DC, Queen) to have four or more songs with over one billion streams.

“Apocalypse” is taken from Cigarettes After Sex’s self-titled 2017 debut album, which is certified platinum in the US, gold in the UK, and double platinum in France and Poland. That album is currently the 143rd most-streamed album ever on Spotify. Cigarettes After Sex’s 2019 album ‘Cry’ is gold in the US, France, and Poland. The band also currently have over 30 million monthly Spotify listeners, which places them inside the top 200 most-listened-to artists in the world on the platform.

“Sunsetz” and “K.” are also from their debut, with “Cry” appearing on the album of the same title. Their most recent album ‘X’s’ was released in 2024 via Partisan Records and thrusted the band into becoming more than simply a preeminent indie act, but one of the most globally accomplished acts across any genre, taking center stage as superstars. Behind ‘X’s,’ in 2024 alone Cigarettes After Sex sold upwards of 750k tickets around the globe, including sold out shows at Madison Square Garden, the O2 Arena, the Kia Forum in LA, and arenas across Asia.

The band have done it all without pulling any of the traditional marketing levers - they have never made a music video, maintain a minimal presence on social media, and rarely give interviews. Read about their unexpected and meteoric rise here in this New York Times profile (“Cigarettes After Sex has become one of the biggest cult bands in the world.”) - here

Cigarettes After Sex are Greg Gonzalez (guitar/vocals), Jacob Tomsky (drums), and Randall Miller (bass). ‘X’s’ is the band’s most intimate and emotionally raw project to date, with Gonzalez chronicling the end of a four-year relationship with unflinching honesty. Known for their cinematic slowcore love songs, ‘X’s’ trades their usual collage of relationships for a singular, immersive narrative, written and recorded in the emotional aftermath of heartbreak. Influenced by 70s/80s slow-dance pop and anchored in Gonzalez’s reverb-soaked vocals, the album captures sensuality, nostalgia, and grief with stunning clarity. It’s a document of love’s beauty and collapse, recorded largely in a quiet Los Angeles bedroom and steeped in the haze of late-night wine, soft light, and emotional wreckage. Listen - here
