With frontman Matt Quinn’s signature emotional resonance “Lucy” channels the ache of grief into a defiant anthem of remembrance. “I wanna live like Lucy died, living my life wire to wire,” Quinn sings, honoring a friend who faced the end with unmatched courage, humor, and grace. The song wrestles with loss while embracing the joy of a life lived loudly, skydiving, dancing, drinking cheap champagne, and always chasing the light. The inspiration for the track came the night Mt. Joy played a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden. After the concert, one of the band members ran into an old friend, who shared the heartbreaking news that she had recently been diagnosed with multiple brain tumors. "We were told that the prognosis was uncertain, but that it would be an uphill battle and there was uncertainty around fighting it at all. It was obviously sobering news," said Matt Quinn. "From the invincible heights of the fairy tale we are so fortunate to experience in this band to the reality of how fragile things are in an instant, it was deeply sad, but I felt instantly inspired by the idea of someone living their life without fear when the odds are stacked against them. I found a pseudonym ("Lucy") and set out to write a song to pay tribute."
Thankfully, the inspiration for “Lucy” is still alive and has access to the treatment she needs. In support of her journey, the band is partnering with Propeller to create a giveaway for fans who support the American Brain Tumor Association. Click HERE to get involved.
The track joins previously released singles “Highway Queen” (a duet with Maren Morris), “God Loves Weirdos,” and “More More More” in building the emotional and sonic world of Hope We Have Fun, a record that explores connection, chaos, and catharsis on and off the road. As with much of Mt. Joy’s work, “Lucy” pairs deeply human storytelling with anthemic arrangements, the kind meant to echo in festival fields and headphones alike.
“Lucy” arrives on the heels of the band’s successful 2024 run, which included sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden, Red Rocks Amphitheater, and The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, plus a 70-date tour across North America and Europe that moved over 180,000 tickets. The upcoming album, Hope We Have Fun, is the culmination of nearly a decade of touring, bonding, and navigating the chaos of chasing a dream.
With over one billion global streams, Top 5 AAA radio hits including “Silver Lining” and “Lemon Tree,” and praise from outlets like Rolling Stone, NPR, and The New York Times, Mt. Joy has firmly cemented themselves as one of the most vital genre-spanning acts.
“Lucy” is out now on all major streaming platforms. Mt. Joy’s Hope We Have Fun tour kicks off next month, with arena dates and festival appearances at Bonnaroo, Governor’s Ball, and Newport Folk Festival.
