(November 8, 2024) - East London’s Aziya releases her new mixtape BAMBI, a multi-layered exploration of fragility and prevailing emotional strength. Across the record, Aziya dissects her experience within her personal relationships and forces of the patriarchy, along with focusing on her relationship with herself. The 10-track project has six full-length tracks, with four musical and spoken word interludes that help to guide the message of the mixtape, including a feature from one of Aziya’s musical inspirations, Santigold, who has been a mentor across the new project.
Speaking about BAMBI, Aziya shares, “I found that last year was a lot of firsts for me. I think I was learning to be comfortable – not just in the industry but in relationships, too. I learnt a lot about myself and my boundaries last year. ‘BAMBI’ is the representation of how sometimes your niceness can be taken for granted, and that you need to overcome it and become a stronger version of that person.”
Alongside the mixtape release, Aziya shares the video for the eponymous “bambi,” which is a frenetic visual directed by DEAD HORSES, James Topley and Ivo Beckett, featuring multi-layered effects of storms and laden with religious iconography.
The new BAMBI era began with “party’s over” and “crush (tom verlaine),” each telling a story of the possible beginning of a romantic connection. “call my name (lux lisbon)” then tells a darker tale inspired by Sofia Coppolla’s Virgin Suicides. On the last single “bbydoll”, Aziya enters into a place of defiance and fortitude. |
