“La Doña is the S.F.-Born Musician for This Moment”

SF Weekly

(August 23rd, 2024) - Today, musician and social activist La Doña shares her new single “El Regreso” featuring jazz flutist, singer, and composer Elena Pinderhughes (Carlos Santana, Esperanza Spalding). The single is the latest offering from her forthcoming debut album, Los Altos de la Soledad due September 6th via Empire and follows La Doña’s previously released singles “Mejor Que Matarte” and “Confesiones.” “El Regreso” translates to “The Return” and La Doña was inspired to write the song about a story one of her music students from Guatemala told her. He shared that he loved La Doña’s music class because when he was in Guatemala every morning his grandfather would wake up and sit in a hammock and play boleros. He can never go back and return to his home where all his family still lives and so La Doña wrote this song for him as an homage to his grandfather. The song comes alongside a visualizer featuring La Doña in the studio performing the track alongside a full orchestra.

As a whole Los Altos De La Soledad chronicles La Doña’s sensuous journey through love, migration, and political awakening. Created with support from the California Arts Council’s Creative Corps Fellowship, these stories are told through corrido, bolero, son jarocho, cumbia and reggaeton, and pay homage to La Doña’s upbringing in San Francisco’s Mission District. The album features international artists and poets including Jeronimo Gonzales, Tongo Eisen-Martin, Qing Qi and Discos Resaca Collective. Recorded in Oakland and Mexico City with a full orchestra, Los Altos de la Soledad integrates field recordings, spoken word and soaring arrangements to transport the listener through landscapes of infatuation, betrayal, heartbreak, resistance, and hope.

Following the release of the album La Doña will be heading on a Fall North American tour beginning in Chicago September 7th at Taste of Chicago Festival and then continuing on in October with stops in Los Angeles, Oakland, Seattle, Austin and more. Full tour routing can be found below.

Over the last few years, La Doña has steadily become an unequivocal artist to watch. La Doña was chosen as one of YouTube’s Foundry Artists (2019) and she has performed at Lollapalooza and Outside Lands music festivals. Los Altos De La Soledad follows her previously celebrated EP’s Can’t Eat Clout and Algo Nuevo as well as her singles "Penas Con Pan," which was featured in President Obama's playlist and “Quién Me La Paga,” which received praise from The New York Times in their “19 Songs that Matter Now.” Both EP’s were selected by the San Francisco Chronicle as two of the best albums of 2020 and 2023, respectively. La Doña was awarded the San Francisco Arts Commission Individual Artists Grant in 2021 and was the recipient of the YBCA's Guaranteed Income Program in 2022. La Doña is a 2023-2024 apprentice in zapateado with the California Alliance for Traditional Arts, and a recipient of the East Bay Fund for Artists Grant ‘23. She is a fellow for California Creative Corps 2024 and has toured internationally with artists including Cuco, Helado Negro, Durand Jones & the Indications and Kaina.
