“Utterly spellbinding…it really does feel like we’re witnessing a Hollywood starlet
in her golden era.” ☆☆☆☆☆—NME
June 7, 2024—Today, GRAMMY®-winning Icelandic-Chinese artist, composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Laufey is premiering a two-track re-release of her song “Bewitched,” alongside a new classical piano interpolation of the track reworked by celebrated Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson. Listen / share HERE.
Of the rework, Laufey explains, “Víkingur and I came from the same music school and have the same musical roots but have ventured in two different directions. I see this collaboration as an ode to our joint heritage. Mostly, I am the biggest Víkingur fan. His recordings have accompanied me throughout my teenage years into my adult life and have served as a soundtrack and a safety blanket to my travels in the past two years. I am so honored he was willing to apply his incredible and unique musicality to my own song.”
Víkingur furthers, “Like so many around the world, I have been bewitched by the talent of Laufey. When she asked me to reimagine her song, ‘Bewitched,’ I didn’t have to think about it for long. I hope you enjoy my little creation for an upright piano in the foreground and two grand pianos placed in the distance—recorded in January in The Northern Lights Hall in Harpa, Iceland.”
“Bewitched” is the title track from Laufey’s 2023 critically-acclaimed album Bewitched which, upon its release, was the biggest debut for a jazz album on Spotify in history and has garnered 1 billion streams to date globally. The album’s hit single “From The Start” is now RIAA-certified Platinum, and in February, Laufey won the 2024 GRAMMY® for “Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.” An expanded edition, Bewitched: The Goddess Edition, was released in April, debuting at #18 on the Billboard 200, #1 Independent Album, #1 Traditional Jazz Album, #2 Vinyl Album, and #3 Current Album. Laufey will continue to take her celebrated live show on the road throughout the summer including stops at Lollapalooza with The Chicago Philharmonic, the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and All Things Go Music Festival with The Kennedy Center Orchestra. See below for full routing.
Los Angeles-based Laufey (pronounced lāy-vāy) was raised between Reykjavík and Washington, D.C. with annual visits to Beijing. In 2020, while still a student at Berklee College of Music, Laufey released her debut single “Street by Street,” which went on to top the Icelandic radio charts. In 2022, she released her debut full-length, Everything I Know About Love, which reached #1 on Billboard’s Alternative New Artist Album chart. The album featured the RIAA-certified Gold singles “Valentine,” which peaked at #1 on the Spotify Jazz Chart, and “Let You Break My Heart Again.” Today, Laufey has over 2 billion streams across all platforms.
