SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Stern Grove Festival, the longest-running free music festival in the US, is excited to announce that the admission-free event will make a return to Sigmund Stern Grove for its 87th season beginning Sunday, June 23. The multi-genre outdoor music festival will once again be home to weekly summer performances from today’s most sought-after acts featuring established and up-and-coming local performers.
After hosting over 90,000 attendees during last year’s season, Stern Grove Festival announces a special lineup featuring Chaka Khan, Sylvan Esso, Alex G, Chicano Batman, Commodores, Drama, Franc Moody, Herbie Hancock, Lucinda Williams, Masego, Poolside, Tegan and Sara and the SF Symphony, who will be returning for their 87th consecutive year. A pillar of Stern Grove’s culture is championing local artists, and in doing so, they’ve invited Poolside, SFJAZZ Collective, Satya, The Grease Traps, King Isis and Fake Fruit.
“We are thrilled to continue our 87 year old mission of presenting free live music for all to enjoy at Stern Grove Festival,” said Matthew Goldman, Board Chair of Stern Grove Festival. “This year’s lineup is eclectic and notable. We have prioritized engaging the upcoming generation of audience members while honoring our legacy concertgoers. We give our tremendous thanks to the City and County of San Francisco, talented musicians, generous donors, and all our attendees for their continued support.”

This year, Stern Grove Festival’s annual fundraiser, The Big Picnic Weekend, is expanding to two days. The weekend takeover kicks off with performances by Poolside and Sylvan Esso on Saturday, August 24th, followed by Chaka Khan on Sunday, August 25th, who is celebrating her 50th anniversary in the music industry. The additional Saturday concert showcases SGF’s commitment to serving the Bay Area community by providing access for an additional 10,000 in-person attendees while enriching the diversity of its season lineup. Since inception in 1938, the non-profit has welcomed over 5 million attendees.
“Our ultimate mission is to serve the community by providing free music to all,” said Bob Fiedler, Executive Director of Stern Grove Festival. “This year we’re increasing our impact by adding an extra show allowing us to serve more people at our beautiful venue. We’re also excited to announce our continued partnership with KPIX who will broadcast our shows to the world via their livestream. We want to ensure that everybody has access to music even if they are not able to attend in-person .”

In 1938, Rosalie Meyer Stern donated 66 acres of land to the City and County of San Francisco, envisioning the park as home to Stern Grove Festival. Over the past 87 years, descendants of Meyer Stern have continued to steward the festival's legacy. For decades the grove has provided a stunning natural acoustic outdoor amphitheater surrounded by towering Eucalyptus trees offering a unique and serene setting. The historic park and concert venue is located at 19th Avenue and Sloat Boulevard in San Francisco’s Sunset District.
Matthew Goldman, Board Chair, and Jason Goldman, Vice Chair, fifth-generation leaders and identical twin brothers, proudly uphold this family tradition, dedicated to realizing SGF's mission of providing free access to live music.
Beginning June 23rd through August 25th, fans of all ages will be treated to musical programming as eclectic and diverse as the city Stern Grove Festival calls home. The season takes place on ten consecutive Sunday afternoons including The Big Picnic Weekend, which will be on a Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
