Today SA Recordings conclude their experimental single series The Hearing Experience with psychedelic, avant garde piece 'Exquisite Corpse 1' by Tara Clerkin Trio.

Bristol based group, Tara Clerkin Trio, is made up of Tara Clerkin and brothers Pat Benjamin and Sunny Joe Paradisos. Inspired by the ‘Howling Owl’ era, a time when musical experimentation took Bristol by storm, the trio delved separately into many corners of music in various different projects experimenting with alternating genres from punk and space rock right through to electronica and alt folk. However, the trio finally came together to make experimental group Tara Clerkin Trio, creating a  concoction of jazz, hip hop, electronica, psychedelia & classical music where they drift from dubby minimalism right through to smudged acid jazz, taking noises from the world around them along the way.

The new Tara Clerkin Trio single ‘Exquisite Corpse 1’ does exactly what it says on the tin, it is a game of the old age favourite game exquisite corpse where players would draw a corpse blind with one person drawing the head and folding it over, then the next drawing the torso, with the game finishing with the last player drawing the feet creating an exquisite corpse. Instead of a pen and paper, the trio took to their instruments and laptops, going in blind with each segment of the song. The track creates moments of peace and tranquillity with moments of dreamy piano, vocals and violins contrasted by moments of extreme chaos with samples and synths, creating an ever changing journey where it feels like you're walking through multiple worlds.

‘Exquisite Corpse’ 1' is the final sonic piece to be released from SA Recordings single series The Hearing Experience. The series is a collection of single releases from experimental artists exploring their relationship with the act of listening. The series features contributions from Astrid Sonne, Tara Clerkin Trio, Lola de la Mata and Damsel Elysium.

The series began with conceptual sound artist Lola de la Mata with her single ‘KOH - Klee - uh’, which is from a wider project Lola is working on titled IUH ea(r) air which is based on her experiences with tinnitus. Although incredibly electronic in its sound, ‘Koh - Klee - uh’ is mostly acoustic, featuring the Canna Sanora, the double bass and the medical tuning forks with only a small moment within the track featuring granular synthesis. The single features an impressive line up featuring renowned percussionist Joby Burgess (Black Panther, Rocketman, Ad Astra etc) and Marianne Schofield (Riot Ensemble, The Hermes Experiment).

Following on from this, Copenhagen-based composer, producer and viola player Astrid Sonne shared ‘How Far’, a piece about listening to the inner voice. The single weaves in and out of redeemed and unredeemed harmonies, through breaths, noises and “half good recordings'', creating the feeling of listening, hearing and existing which was described by Pitchfork a “a sound that holds you suspended in its embrace”.

Then London-based multi-instrumentalist and composer Damsel Elysium (they/them) shared ‘Echoes of Lalia’. Described by Vogue as “London’s most stylish experimental sound artist”, making scores for Gucci’s as well as recently featuring in the recent FKA Twigs Tiny Desk session - Damsel is an emerging avant-garde artist not to be ignored. Damsel utilises double bass, violin and original field recordings to explore alternative communication and connections with physical spaces and nature. ‘Echoes of Lalia’ is an abstract track made up of voice, double bass, violin, piano and original field recordings taken from Damsel’s day in the city. The single is based on Damsel's experience of being neurodivergent in a constantly moving and noisy world.

Today, the series concludes with the new single 'Exquisite Corpse 1' from Tara Clerkin Trio. Following on from this, there will be a live event curated by SA Recordings on September 23rd at IKLECTIK in London. The show will see performances from all the contributing artists.
