Directed by Berlin-based director Hiroo Tanaka, the film is a visual accompaniment to the Consumed In Key world, encapsulating the beautiful yet haunting realm Richie and Chilly have created with their collaborative album.

Consumed In Key is a reimagining of Plastikman’s 1998 magnum opus Consumed. The revered work has been transformed into a new collaborative composition between its original artist Richie Hawtin and Chilly Gonzales. Three decades in the making, the album has been brought into the world by Tiga, credited as Executive Producer, and his Turbo Recordings label.

The original Consumed album was profoundly influential upon release, defining the soon-to-emerge minimal movement. Creative cultural icons are among some of the biggest fans of the album, including sculptor Anish Kapoor, fashion designer Raf Simons and two decades later entertainer Chilly Gonzales.

After hearing Consumed for the first time after the album celebrated its 20th anniversary, Chilly dubbed the album ‘the science fiction of Jazz’ and felt that the original record’s loose use of melody and negative space disrupted his musical sensibility. He explains, “To hear Consumed, to hear the freedom in how it was made, and to hear the confidence within which it stands behind so few elements was almost like a threat I had to respond to.” Curious and intrigued by Consumed, Chilly began to compose accompanying piano pieces for each track from the original album, with Tiga stepping in as the conduit between both artists.

This Friday, the album will be released digitally and as a deluxe eco-conscious triple vinyl LP. The album artwork is a reinterpretation of the original Consumed cover, flipped to black and white with the cutout size transposed to the dimensions of a piano key. The vinyl and packaging were made using recycled materials.

Born of the obsessive love of a timeless work of art, Consumed in Key results from a 30-year cycle of musical evolution and inspiration, a touch of Canadian kismet (all three are from Canada), and artists finding common ground where others would see none.

Richie, Chilly, and Tiga will be discussing Consumed In Key on Instagram Live on April 3 at 11am PST/2pm EST
