The dust may have only just settled on the brilliant 15th edition of End Of The Road Festival, but with early bird tickets for 2022 selling out in less than a minute, the team behind the “life-affirming festival” (Guardian, ★★★★★) refuse to take their foot off the gas, so are proud to announce alternative rock icons Pixies will finally be bringing their primal storm to the stunning Larmer Tree Gardens site to headline for the first time.
Do the Pixies need any introduction? It’s the band Kurt Cobain said he stole his riffs from and the ones who made loud-quiet-loud into an art form. It's not an exaggeration to say that the sound of alternative rock wouldn’t be what it is today without them.
Over the nine years of their initial run, Pixies delivered some of the most intense, combustible and raw rock music ever made. “Tame”, “Where Is My Mind?”, “Debaser” - these were intense, visceral and magnificent songs that defined the time, with Black Francis screaming about Old Testament Christianity and UFOs like a man possessed as the band’s music erupted into primal storms around him.
They remain as vital and brilliantly weird now. The group's 2019 album, Beneath The Eyrie, saw them exploring stranger corners of their psyche whilst sounding as absorbing and supernatural as ever. On stage, the weird, wild veterans remain thrillingly raw, with their early material mixing with the wondrous new songs.
It’s a case of third time lucky for Pixies at End Of The Road Festival; having been booked to headline the ill-fated 2020 edition as festivals all over the country had to cancel, and then again in 2021, whilst the festival was still a wonderful success, travel restrictions meant they had to pull out. King Krule acknowledged this in his headline, festival-closing set, by covering their song “Wave of Mutilation”, so it’s fitting that now, End Of The Road Festival are more excited than ever to make up for lost time, and see them take to the festival's legendary Woods Stage for 2022.
It was incredible for End Of The Road to welcome festival-goers back to revel amongst the peacocks after so long apart. The success of the 15th Edition has confirmed to everyone involved how special the festival is, and made them determined to throw an even bigger and better party in 2022, full to the brim of the uniquely wonderful details that set End Of The Road Festival apart from its peers.
