(2nd August 21) ––– Enfield, London based multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer Scout today releases their debut EP 'Rather Be Blind (Than See My Life Without You)' – fronted by new single "California Dreaming".
With sonic touchstones ranging from MUNA and 070Shake to Christine & The Queens, the new EP features previously released singles "Never Fade" and "Rather Be Blind" and provides a succinct snapshot of Scout's nostalgic take on modern pop.
Exploring romanticised notions of the pull of "the big city", EP opener and new single "California Dreaming" is an alluring, deftly constructed alt-pop gem.
"'California Dreaming' is about coming-of-age/living in a small town," Scout explains. "I wanted to write about the “us and them” feeling I used to live with, watching stuff on TV and social media and when everything just feels so far removed from you and your mates lives. I used to feel pretty stuck back home [in Sweden] but now I can see that what you have in those places and the people you share it with is pretty special. There’s almost a bond you share if you haven’t gone on expensive holidays or had exciting stuff on your doorstep growing up."
At its core, the 'Rather Be Blind (Than See My Life Without You)' EP is about growing up, heartbreak, and learning to understand and love yourself. Scout went on to say: "I like to write about places I've lived and details and stuff that stuck with me. The biggest overall theme is growing pains and shaky relationships I’ve had with others, and myself. I hope people will be able to relate and see a bit of themselves in it, hopefully it’ll brighten their day that someone else is struggling and messing up too."
Fiercely independent, Scout's undeniable creative streak shines through across this debut project of theirs. Designing the artwork, as well as shooting and editing the videos themselves, they went on to say: "I’ve done everything very DIY at home on this EP. Everything is on a bit of a timeline - I wanted to be able to follow through with the story through the songs and the visuals. Visuals are super important to me, I love art and film and for me it’s a something I can’t wait to build on further and tie in more on my next EP."
Having played in bands throughout much of their teenage years, Scout readily admits they always felt more drawn to writing and pop music. Using cinematic references and placed over sampled beats found on YouTube, Scout also worked with producers including Gethin Pearson (Charli XCX, Orla Gartland), Joe Cross (Lana Del Rey, Hurts) and Hoost (Rina Sawayama, Dan Caplen) on the EP.
Scout's classically trained musical prowess and their lush pop soundscapes, paired with an inarguable gift for story telling make for a compelling and exciting new talent. With her debut EP released today, and a second EP ready to go, Scout is without doubt an artist to watch. Scout's debut EP 'Rather Be Blind (Than See My Life Without You)' is out now.
