Today Pachyman, the dub project of LA-based multi-instrumentalist Pachy García, releases his ATO Records debut The Return of Pachyman. Pachyman, who won this year’s Latin Alternative Music Conference Discovery Award, is a one-man band - García plays and records all of the instruments on the record himself, and his songs take influence from the old-school Caribbean reggae sound he fell in love with growing up in San Juan, Puerto Rico. “With this project, I was looking to make positive music and radiate good energy; something to kinda disconnect from the negative things that were happening at the moment,” says García. “I am trying to make this project a service for humanity in the sense that I just wanted to shine a positive light.”
PRAISE FOR PACHYMAN:
“If you're looking for good reggae-infused notes and sun-kissed percussion to be the sound of your summer — look no further. Pachyman, consistent king of smooth beats, is here.” - NPR MUSIC
Aside from being a master-level instrumentalist, Pachyman is a breezy, fun-loving, and freedom seeking artist… His works are a well sonically seasoned mix, in which his Puerto Rican roots shine bright and are elevated by a layer of funkadelic grooves and topped with a chill reggae thump.” - SPIN
“García performs the track with such ease and joy we want to be teleported wherever he is right now.” - REMEZCLA
“I’ve got to say on this tune ‘Big Energy’ he has tapped into something incredible. This to me sounds so much like early 80s reggae and dub that I couldn’t believe it.” - MATT WILKINSON, APPLE MUSIC
Pachyman recently recorded two Scientist covers as an homage to the legendary Greensleeves label for Aquarium Drunkard, who wrote, “Pachyman, the one-man dub reggae project of Pachy Garcia, is not to be slept on. Born in San Juan, PR, and now residing in Los Angeles, Garcia’s latest long-player is laced with the good shit. At a dozen tracks, it’s a roots ride of originals, all with knowing nods to the genre’s greatest innovators.” Listen to the Lagniappe Session HERE.
Pachyman will play a sold-out hometown record release show at LA’s Zebulon tonight. He will make his NYC debut opening for four Black Pumas shows at Brooklyn Steel on September 13, 14, 15 and 16 and support Khruangbin on two dates in Colorado and Utah later that month. Upcoming festival appearances include Desert Daze in Perris, California in November and My Morning Jacket’s One Big Holiday in Cancun, Mexico in March of 2022.
