Today, composer, performer and producer Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith and Academy Award-nominated producer, singer and composer Emile Mosseri have released their first joint single “Log In Your Fire” with the official video. “Log In Your Fire” is the first song from the duo’s new two cycle album, I Could Be Your Dog (Prequel), coming September 15th on Ghostly International.
The visual for “Log In Your Fire”, directed by Chantal Anderson, captures the anxiety of losing something precious, encompassed in a singular dream-like moment, and resolves with a beautifully symbolic end. The video’s romantic metaphor of loving someone so deeply that even getting to be one chapter of many is a sentiment woven throughout the music. Watch HERE.
Smith’s work as a producer and composer has pushed the boundaries of experimental music and amassed critical acclaim from the likes of Pitchfork, NPR Music, The New York Times and more. Mosseri has collaborated with artists such as Angel Olsen, Haxan Cloak and scored multiple award-winning and notable films, most recently Minari, Kajillionaire and The Last Black Man in San Francisco. Smith and Mosseri realized they were neighbors in Los Angeles and met up for a few hikes before the pandemic began to separate the world. Both had been mutual admirers of each other's work, however, it was not until Smith had moved away that a collaboration between the two artists began to materialize. Despite the physical distance between Smith and Mosseri, their virtual connecting sparked a friendship and musical exchange over email, the exercise becoming the framework for their eventual first song together, “Log In Your Fire”. From there, the pair composed a series of musical foundations, trading files from afar throughout 2020. About their process, Mosseri notes, “That's one of the things that was so special about this collaboration, it felt like we were writing music through one another.” The resulting body of work is completely unique from anything the two have done before. “I first imagined we would both go more in our ‘composerly’ direction,” says Smith. “I was pleasantly surprised that we created songs. It feels like a perfect blend of the composers we both are — that like to weave narrative song structure into cinematic arrangements.”
I Could Be Your Dog (Prequel) moves fluidly from track to track, panning through textural vignettes constructed using synthesizer, piano, electronics, and vocals. With a duration of only 17 minutes, I Could Be Your Dog (Prequel) evokes the bittersweet sense of something too bright or rare to last, a short-lived glimpse into a golden hour. There is a dreamy element, which Smith and Mosseri say came naturally, as they both embraced intuitive interplay throughout their creative back-and-forth. The second cycle of the project, I Could Be Your Moon (Sequel) is expected in 2022.
