On June 1 Akashic Books will release five titles as part of their their LyricPop series - children's books that feature song lyrics by renowned songwriters as illustrated picture books. The new titles are: Paul Simon’s anthem “The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)” with illustrations by Keith Henry Brown that depict a day biking around NYC, Gary Wright’s 1972 hit “Dream Weaver” with illustrations by Rob Sayegh Jr who imagines a little boys dream of a train that takes him to the moon, and the massive disco hit “I Will Survive” popularized by Gloria Gaynor with lyrics written by Dino Fekaris and Frederick J. Perre, illustrations are by Kaitlyn Shea O’Connor who brings the song to life as an empowering picture book featuring an alien princess living life on her own terms. Additionally, also released that day will be the book featuring Coldplay’s hit “Strawberry Swing” with illustrations that tell the story of friendship by Mitch Miller, and “Where Is My Mind?” which Black Francis wrote for his band The Pixes, with illustrations by Alex Eben Meyer who animates the song with a whimsical adventure story. Uproxx said of the series: “The illustrations imagine the lyrics alongside cartoon cats, cooperative families, and other, kid-friendly fare, making them as fascinating to look at as they are to read — and sing — aloud.”
To date Akashic Books has released 10 books in the “LyricPop” series, ranging from "Good Vibrations" (Mike Love and Brian Wilson) to "We're Not Gonna Take It" (Dee Snider) to "These Boots Are Made for Walkin"(Lee Hazlewood) to "We Got the Beat" (Charlotte Caffey). “We are looking to include a wide range of musical genres—including rhythm and blues, rock, pop, punk, hip hop, and country—to create books that appeal to a diverse array of children and families,” said Johnny Temple, publisher of Akashic Books. “The idea of giving parents, grandparents, teachers and caregivers a way to connect kids with music early on through picture books is exciting. And when adults sing the lyrics as they read the books, it becomes a multimedia experience, introducing books and music at the same time.” The full list of LyricPop books both released and forthcoming is below.
