"In any sane universe, academic studies would be devoted to Ron and Russell Mael,
as they are to Dylan, Bowie or The Beatles. Municipal buildings and parks
would be named after them. Statues would be erected in their honor.
In the mind of the convert, Sparks are that significant."
-Simon Price
Ground-breaking pop pioneers Sparks – Los Angeleno brothers Ron and Russell Mael – have released their new song, "One For The Ages." The song, available now via BMG at all DSPs and streaming services, can also be experienced via an animated video created by the Estonian director Chintis Lundgren.
"Who among us doesn't feel the need to be involved with One For The Ages, either in a creative endeavor, a personal relationship, or as the next Michael Jordan?" asked Ron Mael.
"One For The Ages" is taken from Sparks’ upcoming 24th studio album, A STEADY DRIP, DRIP, DRIP, due out Friday, May 15 on digital platforms with the release date for CD, vinyl and cassette now set for July 3. Pre-orders are available now, with all pre-orders joined by ‘instant grat’ downloads of "One For The Ages" as well as previous tracks "I’m Toast," "Self-Effacing" and "Please Don’t Fuck Up My World." A number of formats are on offer, including CD, 2x heavyweight colored and picture disc vinyl, and cassette; limited exclusives include signed prints, deluxe CD book editions, and a very special Sparks beret. “Self Effacing” also arrived in March, accompanied by an official lyric video streaming now via YouTube. The track was immediately named a “Song You Need To Know” by Rolling Stone, writing, “Who but Sparks would release a bombastic song about being modest? ‘Self-Effacing’ is just what you’ve come to expect from the art-rock duo: grand vocals, dramatic music, and pure camp…An anthem for introverts everywhere, it’s a strong kickoff for the band, whose last album, HIPPOPOTAMUS, dropped in 2017.”
Last year saw Sparks first heralding A STEADY DRIP, DRIP, DRIP with the festive album track, “Please Don’t Fuck Up My World.” The track received worldwide applause upon its pre-Christmas release, with Uncut declaring it to be “a plaintive message of hope, expressed in Sparks’ own, inimitable way.” “The one and only Sparks are back with a brand new single that feels very of the moment,” raved Brooklyn Vegan. “While ‘Please Don’t Fuck Up My World’ doesn’t name names, lyrics like All that you are pursuing / please don’t fuck up my world / can’t you see what you’re doing are clearly aimed at the head of state of your choice. Russell and Ron Mael using a children’s choir in the chorus underlines things nicely.”
Now entering their sixth decade, Sparks will celebrate A STEADY DRIP, DRIP, DRIP with a brief series of European live dates, to be followed next year by an epic 2021 world tour. This year will also see the eagerly awaited premiere of Annette, the first English-language film from groundbreaking French director Leos Carax (Holy Motors, Pola X), written by Ron and Russell Mael and starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard. In addition, director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Baby Driver) is putting the final touches to his long-in-the-making Sparks documentary, an as-yet-untitled feature-length film celebrating this singular band.
