Friday July 12 - NPR Music today dropped their Tiny Desk Concert with indie folk singer-songwriter Erin Rae who performed songs from her critically acclaimed record, Putting On Airs, earning the respect of music notables including Father John Misty and Jason Isbell who she joined on tour earlier this summer.
NPR Music’s Lars Gotrich stated, “Every time I've seen Erin Rae live, she transforms her quiet storms into different hues of squalling introspection. Her performance at the Tiny Desk opens with a soft tide of ambient tones — both a way to ease into the song but also understand that life's unease is ever-present. Then a lilting acoustic melody introduces "Bad Mind," a stunning statement of identity from a Nashville singer-songwriter who shares the secrets we keep close.”
He added, “Erin Rae writes songs about letting go of lovers and thoughts that weigh you down, embracing contentment and recognizing the small moments that add up to the grand scheme. But more importantly her songs make you just sit in your thoughts for a tick longer. Putting On Airs, the album Erin Rae released last year, wraps these subtle shifts of folkloric psychedelia in deeply personal songwriting that hits hard two, three listens in.”Erin will tour throughout the US in 2019 with shows opening for Dylan LeBlanc on dates including LA’s Troubadour on July 18, she will also perform at Newport Folk Festival, Nashville’s Live On The Green, Mountain Stage and at Americanafest in Nashville in September. Erin recently received a nomination for Best Emerging Act Of The Year at the 2019 Americana Music Honors and Awards. For more information click here.
The former backing vocalist stepped out into the spotlight with Putting on Airs, exploring her struggle to understand her own sexuality and her experience with mental health growing up in Tennessee. Single “Bad Mind,” shared a deeply personal account of coming to terms with a difficult event from her childhood, where an Alabama supreme court ruled her aunt to be an “unfit” mother, solely because she was gay. NPR Music’s Marissa Lorusso voted it one of NPR Music’s best songs of 2018 and described it as an “Uneasy reckoning which results in a warm, beautiful song built of both pain and empathy.” Putting On Airs also received praise from publications including, Stereogum who described her vocals as “Beautifully understated”. Popmatters said, “The unforced intimacy and intelligence of her songwriting, the cooing birdsong melodies, and the country/folk/roots blend of sounds in which its all cloaked make Putting on Airs no small pleasure.” Uproxxdescribed Rae’s record as a, “sweet, warm wind, rushing through your window just when you need a reminder of how beautiful and breezy life can be.”
Rae’s distinct voice has drawn comparison to a diverse range of contemporaries from Jenny Lewis and Phoebe Bridgers to 60s and 70s singer-songwriters including The Carpenters and Janis Ian. Putting On Airs released on John Paul White’s Single Lock records in 2018, is the perfect soundscape for Rae’s soothing vocals and a genre-fusing mix of indie-rock, psych-rock and folk. The recently released four track demos were recorded in 2016 in Philadelphia, by album co-producer Jerry Benhardt and became the backbone of the album recording sessions for the album Putting On Airs, which was recorded in the dead of winter at The Refuge, a former Franciscan monastery run by singer-songwriters Cory Chisel and Adriel Denae in Appleton, WI. The album was co-produced by multi-instrumentalist Jerry Bernhardt and engineer Dan Knobler (Rodney Crowell, Tift Merritt) and featured Dominic Billett on drums.
