In support of Ballads, Molly will embark on a North American Tour with dates beginning July 27 in Bengough, SK and concluding in her hometown of Austin, TX on September 7. Along the way she will stop in Washington, DC, Brooklyn, Los Angeles and Seattle, among other markets. All dates are listed below.
Released last October, First Flower is a bright, beautiful album peppered with moments of triumph. The LP is a walk-through Molly's most intimate thoughts, exploring broken friendships, her relationship to her sister and how she learned to fight overwhelming anxiety. Throughout, her voice is as strong and dexterous as ever, displaying her incredible range and capability as a vocalist. When Hurricane Harvey kept Molly locked in at home, she wrote much of the album, bouncing ideas off her bandmate and boyfriend Dailey Toliver who contributed guitar parts and orchestration suggestions. When it came time to record, Burch chose to work with Erik Wofford at Cacophony Recorders in Austin. Leading up to its release, Molly shared the singles "Wild," "To The Boys" and “Candy."
PRAISE FOR FIRST FLOWER
“Burch is a trained jazz vocalist, but the music on her fine new LP First Flower elides styles, and even centuries, blurring classic country, torch-y ballads and Latin-tinged rhythms into a style that might feel Lynchian if her songs weren’t so personable and warm." ROLLING STONE
"...stoic with the innate sensual glow of Golden Era Hollywood starlets like Judy Garland and Loretta Young. But just like those iconic women, there’s something mysterious about her that’s hard to pinpoint. She’s the last person in the club you would expect to be center stage, but when she is up there — she transforms. And she is excellent."
--FADER GEN F FEATURE
"By inserting pointed lyrics into an older musical style, Burch stirs up many of the assumptions that surround the way she sings. On 'To the Boys,' she is both feminine and in charge. She doesn’t need to play-act machismo in order to be heard. She knows there is strength in her gentleness." PITCHFORK
"Like Peggy Lee, Francoise Hardy, Jane Birkin and others, Molly Burch is a chanteuse, exploring the edges of noir songs with beauty, sadness, and an honest vulnerability that’s powerful yet strikingly understated." AMERICAN SONGWRITER
"The open-ended imagery of a two-person partnership falls under Burch’s magic for finding the archetypal emotion in everyday life." AUSTIN CHRONICLE COVER STORY
"Burch is your typical Texan girl-next-door with a twist of mysterious vixen power." PENTHOUSE
"It’s all give-and-take between the jangly lead guitar and Burch’s warm, jazzy vocals, painting the singer-songwriter as both feminine and in-charge." PASTE
"There’s a self-soothing vibe to the way Burch opens up on First Flower, like she’s reaching out, looking for like-minded souls. And it is a worthwhile effort."
