"Their music is modal, spacious, hypnotic, instrumental, and oozes the laid-back, endless summer vibe of those beach towns south of L.A.... A potpourri of sonic colors and trance-inducing grooves." - PREMIER GUITAR
"Their work blends jazz fusion, psychedelia, and a surprising element of surf music, allowing them to appeal to jazz fans and jam-band hippies alike." - STEREOGUM
"Telepathic chemistry - effortlessly and mesmerizingly in-sync." - AQUARIUM DRUNKARD
Mattson 2, the psychedelic jazz duo of identical twin brothers Jared and Jonathan Mattson, has built a reputation for their incredible technical proficiency - Jared on guitar, Jonathan on drums - through their 2017 collaborative album with Chaz Bear of Toro y Moi, their 2018 full album cover of John Coltrane's A Love Supreme, and their relentless touring with acts like Khruangbin and Money Mark. Today, the Mattsons are introducing an entirely new facet to their music - their new album Paradise is due out June 7 on Bear's label Company Records and features the first Mattson 2 songs that include their own vocals.
Paradise's first single is the dreamlike "Essence," which the duo premiered today via a VHS-style video that director Anthony Sylvester intended to capture the beauty of the brothers' native California. "The VHS film and the less-pristine nature of it gives something many of us can all connect to," say the Mattsons, "the prized trophy we held and filmed our friends with while thumbing through CDs and VHS tapes at Circuit City, whilst maybe catching a free flick on the big screen in the cushy soundroom. Not to mention the musicianship is shown at a level reminiscent of live performance."
KCRW, who premiered "Essence" today, write, "In the fuzzed out, purposefully VHS-style video for 'Essence,' you'll see the Mattson 2 floating through sublime vistas, beaches, and mountain scenescapes. Very apropos, as their crystalline, melodic surf-psych sound conjures up greener pastures and sunny days. 'You're so special, you're so easy,' they sing, almost inviting you to join them in these beautiful places."
Paradise is out June 7 on Company Records. It is available for pre-order HERE.
Mattson 2 will be on tour this May, including festival plays at Vermont's Waking Windows, Ohio's Nelsonville Music Festival, and Colorado's Telluride Jazz Festival, SFJAZZ Festival, and dates opening for Nick Waterhouse. All dates are below.
