Stereogum recently named them one of the Best News Bands of 2018, writing, "Kiss Yr Frenemies is one of the best debuts in recent memory," and Thrillist hailed the record as one of the most underrated albums of the year, raving, "[Tudzin] proves her stake as an emerging indie great." Steven Hyden at Uproxx also recently profiled the band and added to the praise, writing, "Kiss Yr Frenemies is one of the best indie rock debuts of 2018, an understated yet quietly ambitious collection of songs that demonstrate Tudzin's breezy mastery of modern rock styles, from snotty punk to luminous synthpop."
PRAISE FOR KISS YR FRENEMIES:
"The many feelings-love, uncertainty, heartbreak, FOMO, contemplativeness, empathy-Tudzin juggles throughout the album come together to capture the emotional complexity of being a young adult in the current decade." - Pitchfork
"Across the board Tudzin's tunes overflow with tiny flourishes and grand gestures, disciplined and concise yet beaming with the excitement that comes from taking leaps and tapping into your potential... She's writing better songs than just about anybody going right now, especially for someone just edging her way into adulthood." -Stereogum (Album of the Week)
"A playful project that balances heart-on-sleeve sentiments with levity and wit." - NPR
"College-debt blues with the surfy charm of classic Go-Go's. The result is power pop with a cool dose of realism." - Rolling Stone
"Sarah Tudzin [has a] knack for excruciatingly relatable imagery and bouncy diction." - The Fader
MORE ON ILLUMINATI HOTTIES:
Despite the pluralized nom de guerre, illuminati hotties is the creative outlet of Sarah Tudzin - a producer, engineer, and burrito aficionado hailing from the sprawl of Los Angeles. Armed with bright white shortveralls and a rotating line-up of Sarah's bffs, illuminati hotties has been lighting up stages across SoCal since Fall 2016 with playfully interweaving guitar lines, relentless rhythmic momentum, and strikingly self-aware vocals. Lauded as local "tenderpunk pioneers," illuminati hotties has perfected the blend of sweetness and ferocity, of celebration and despondency, in their soon-to-be released debut album, Kiss Yr Frenemies.
At first listen, illuminati hotties is a sun-drenched, irreverent volley with the onset of adulthood, but as the listener dives deeper, they will find an earnest consideration of musical phrasing and deliberately crafted wordplay regarding the complexity of love, loss, and skateboarding. illuminati hotties' live show challenges audiences to bring their deepest feels and fiercest moves to the floor, and has elicited comparisons to Best Coast, Angel Olsen, Courtney Barnett, and Alvvays.
