Fresh off a successful appearance at last weekend's Fun Fun Fun Festival, Austin-based group The Octopus Project kicks off the western half of their North American tour this week by dropping a new digital single and video for 'Whitby.' Full list of tour dates below.

The track is pulled from a yet-untitled album of new material planned for release in Spring 2013. According to band member Josh Lambert, the album is "equally the poppiest and the weirdest thing we've ever done." The 'Whitby' digital single (Peek-A-Boo Records) features an additional remix and is available TODAY on iTunes, eMusic, and the usual digital channels. An extended single which includes additional bonus tracks (b-sides! a karaoke version!) is available for purchase exclusively from the Peek-A-Boo Records website. The band will also be selling a limited edition bundle at shows, which includes a silk-screened poster with a download code for the extended single.

The video for 'Whitby' is available at Stereogum, YouTube, and Vimeo. Created, shot and directed by the band, the stop-motion extravaganza was crafted entirely using die-cut colored card stock. Band members meticulously designed each shape in Photoshop then used a cutting machine generally reserved for scrapbooking to cut the shapes out before photographing them in real world settings. The final video consists of over 4,000 separate images.

'Whitby' is the first official release since 2010's highly-praised Hexadecagon double-LP, which earned the band the title "The Rolling Stones of bleep-bloop" by The Onion. The Hexadecagon tour was a massive, immersive audio-visual endeavor which took them out on the road for the better part of a year with such legends as DEVO, Explosions In the Sky, and Man... or Astro-Man. In the time since, they've scored a feature film, an in-development video game and written and recorded the aforementioned new album.
