The Modernless: A Great Band You've Never Heard Of
(photographer unknown)
The Modernless is a electronic rock band from New York but now based in London. Lead by Johnny Love on vox, Will Crewdson (Adam Ant, Rachel Stamp) on guitar, and hailing from Japan on drums, Kosei Terunuma. They are doing some shows in London, but haven't planned a full tour yet. They seem to frequent art galleries for many of their shows, as if an art installation themselves. They've just released a new album: Terror By Night as a digital download on iTunes. (Limited Edition CDs avaiable in Rough Trade).
They caught my attention last year after posting a single on twitter. It's rare that I like something that quick. The music has a rich ambience to it. Vintage post modern lo-fi. Traces of Ministry, Depeche Mode, Modern English, but fresh and new at the same time.
There have been an outbreak of bands bringing the past back into our palletes over the last couple years (Cold Cave, Crocodiles, Drink Up Buttercup, Har Mar Superstar, The Growlers, Vivian Girls, Screaming Females). For me this has been a good thing. Managing to bring some of the music we loved back to life, in new and interesting ways. The Modernless is no exception and is very pure. With most songs 5 minutes or longer, Johnny Love's vision is clearly unaffected and he's stayed true to his art.
I recommend giving this album a listen. Minkbirds is genius.
The albums is only 7$ on iTunes- You can buy it here
You can stream some of the new songs from the myspace
