The publication of Jack White Collected Lyrics and Selected Writing Volume 1 follows what proved to be a milestone 2025 for White, including The White Stripes’ induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (streaming now on Disney+; a three-hour primetime special featuring highlights from the ceremony aired New Year’s Day on ABC and is available now on Hulu). Adrian Matejka explores and analyzes White’s distinctive use of words, while dream hampton, in an essay entitled “It Sure Must Be Rough on Rats: Jack White’s Sermon from the Forgotten Pews of Southwest Detroit,” approaches White’s work as a fellow Detroiter, writing, “Detroit has long known how to sing its sorrow into something sacred. Jack just keeps showing up with the amplifier.” In addition, White’s longtime friend and business partner Ben Blackwell takes readers behind the curtain with his personal insight into White’s remarkable creative process.   White’s most recent album, 2024’s No Name, is available now via Third Man Records. There's a tendency in metal to mistake aggression for honesty, volume for depth. To confuse the performance of darkness with its actual weight. Hidden Fires Burn Hottest, the new album from San Francisco-based post-black metal band Bosse-de-Nage, sidesteps this entirely. It’s the group’s most fully realized work yet, precisely because it refuses to be pinned down.

Bosse-de-Nage have been working with The Flenser for over fifteen years. They were one of the first bands the label ever partnered with and have the longest active relationship in the label's history. But unlike most bands who build momentum through constant touring and visibility, Bosse-de-Nage has largely existed apart from the music world's usual machinery. They've evolved on their own terms, in relative isolation, allowing the work to develop without outside pressure or influence. What began rooted in black metal anonymity has mutated into something that actively defies categorization. The aggression is still there, but it's no longer the point.

Tracked by Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Oathbreaker) at Atomic Garden East and mixed and mastered by Richard Chowenhill of Agriculture, Hidden Fires Burn Hottest was years in development, with some tracks beginning in 2018. The long writing process offered time that most records don't get. Time to live with ideas, revise endlessly, to let structures settle. For the first time, lyricist Bryan Manning wrote everything in advance, creating a surplus to pull from rather than working under deadline pressure. The difference shows.

8 years since the release of Further Still, an album built on constraint and economy, Bosse-de-Nage sought the opposite: sprawl, strangeness, fewer rules. Space for ideas to develop without rushing them. Dynamics that move through quiet as much as noise. Presence earned through atmosphere instead of volume. Hidden Fires Burn Hottest finds Bosse-de-Nage treating emotions like physical objects, feelings with spatial properties.  First single “No Such Place" describes a space that can't exist but does anyway, somewhere between thought and location.  The band says it's "...one of the oldest tracks from this song cycle and has come to represent the heart of 'Hidden Fires Burn Hottest.' It is perhaps the closest realization of the original vision we had for this album. All of the restrictions we placed on ourselves for Further Still have been shed like old skin and a new form has emerged."

Nothing on Hidden Fires Burn Hottest coheres into a theme. These are pieces pulled from low moments and private feelings made public through sound. The band has never been interested in positivity, in music that resolves cleanly or offers comfort. But bleakness doesn't mean humorlessness. There's something darkly funny running through much of it, even when it shouldn't be.

Hidden Fires Burn Hottest doesn't explain itself. It just insists: what you feel is as real as what you can see.  Pre-order the album here ahead of its March 6th release date.

Photo credit: Inigo Blake  London-based cellist, singer and songwriter midori jaeger has shared a second look at her forthcoming EP ‘(Un)planted', which is set for release on March 9th. It's the first part of a double EP release, with the counterpart due to follow later in 2026. Following the biophilic previous single "dark green", today she shares "exasperate" - a woody and angular track, alive with a restless percussive energy. Speaking on the track, she comments: "To exasperate somebody is to push them to their limits. This song is about knowing you did that, but also knowing it was true to who you are. From the tree, the wood. From the wood, the cello. From the cello, a human—wrapping herself around it.   Dug from the soil and shaped into song, the cello is the most human of all instruments. It vibrates at a grounding frequency and rumbles throughout the body. Its player doesn't merely clasp it by the neck but tightly swaddles it. For London-based musician midori jaeger — who has received cosigns from Adrianne Lenker and Moses Sumney, among others — this intimate bond has been one of her only constants amid a life marked by incessant uprooting and replanting.   Born in Japan and relocated to the UK at five, she later returned to Tokyo at sixteen before settling in London to study music full-time two years later. Each move was a replanting, each city a new soil.   midori began playing the cello at eight, a decision that would entwine her identity with the instrument. Classically trained at the Royal Academy of Music, midori eventually diverged from the rigid traditions she was schooled in. "Classical training made me feel quite insecure," she says. "I started feeling like, what's the point in me practising nine hours a day to just play this as well as someone else who can already do it? I kind of want to do something that only I could do."   There is no better descriptor for midori’s work: something only she could do. That insistence on personal expression defines her two latest EPs — her largest, most comprehensive, and most arresting works yet. Each song came quickly into being during the immediate aftermath of a long-term relationship, while Jaeger still lived in the bedroom she shared with her ex. After a gestational period, she later recorded the EPs over ten intense days in Lisbon, playing cello, bass synth, synth, and cavaquinho, with drums by a close friend.
