Lala Lala Announces New Album, Heaven 2, Out Feb 27th & North American Tour

Lala Lala, the project of Lillie West, announces her new album and Sub Pop debut, Heaven 2, out February 27th, and a North American tour (on sale Jan. 9th). In conjunction, she releases two new singles, “Heaven2” and “Even Mountains Erode,” which follow the existential “Does This Go Faster?,” a tone setter for Heaven 2 which “glimmers with champagne-bubbly synths and percussion” (FLOOD). 

West has always made her music in response to an itchiness to always be moving, but as she developed a burgeoning desire to settle, she found the surprise realization that steadiness can beget creativity. That evolutionary tension is what fuels Heaven 2. The album was co-produced by West and Jay Som’s Melina Duterte, who provides a strong punchiness as a bed for West’s warm, rounded vocals. Duterte and West performed almost all of the album’s instruments with a few crucial guests, including Sen Morimoto, Macie Stewart and Porches’ Aaron Maine. 

For many years, West lived in Chicago, where she established Lala Lala as an integral part of the city’s indie scene, releasing two albums – The Lamb (2018) and I Want the Door to Open (2021) – on the Sub Pop imprint Hardly Art. They were powerful statements from a curious artist: catchy guitar-pop songs about being stuck in the ups and downs of life, the struggle to stay sober, to leave town, to blow up your life. 

West left Chicago to search for more, and in the process, wrote Heaven 2. On her journey, she landed off the grid in Taos, New Mexico, then made her way to Iceland, where she lived on and off for two years, with the off being in London, where she grew up. Following a residency in a tiny Icelandic town, she made her way to Reykjavik and released an instrumental album, If I Were A Real Man I Would Be Able To Break The Neck Of A Suffering Bird (2024), and finally headed to Los Angeles, where she has, almost surprisingly, fallen in love and found herself settled. It’s been a good place to live, not because she particularly likes or dislikes L.A., but because she’s discovered that, as she puts it, “wherever you go, there you are.” This sentiment permeates throughout Heaven 2. 

Take “Even Mountains Erode” in which West sings about how it’s ultimately okay to be on one’s own: “There are symbols and signs, you’re missing your life // You’re under a threat, that you can’t feel yet // And if you need to be free, I don’t see what you see // But I’m not opposed // Even mountains erode.” And the melodramatic “Heaven2,” written at a time of feeling defeated. West’s vocals build like a cloud swelling before a storm, synths sweep across the song, the drums patter like raindrops on a car roof, and then the whole sky opens up, with a massive instrumental outro taken straight from the demo.

Catharsis is not only about the pain, but the escape that happens when you free yourself of it. And so there are moments of bold joy on the album, too. “Resistance is the root of all suffering, and I did not know that,” says West. “I thought that I could dictate the course of my life.” Of course, like everyone else, she could not. Wherever you go, there you are.

After November’s incendiary tour of Europe and the UK that included two London shows that sold out in a matter of hours, plus a performance at Le Guess Who?, the 5-piece announced a spring 2026 tour of Europe and the UK that includes two dates at the MOTH Club, London on April 28th and April 29th. The group’s debut album, Attempted Martyr, has been steadily accruing devoted followers and accolades since its original release: Pitchfork and Anthony Fantano reviewed, while Stereogum and The Quietus spoke to the band. Loosely a concept album, Attempted Martyr is a full-spectrum blast of acerbic noise, sampler shrapnel, savagely mordant humor and bruised melancholy. Its complexity and simmered rage conjure a fever dream of hope, desperation and alienation, a riot of artful profanity, disturbing imagery and blacker-than-midnight wit. An album for these perilous, cursed times, even if it wasn’t conceived as such, Attempted Martyr isn’t noise for its own sake, it’s for everyone’s: a catharsis, a venting, a return of fire. Based in Dearborn, MI, a town with America’s largest Muslim population, Prostitute were founded by Moe (frontman) and Andrew (drummer) who together write the group’s lyrics, and conceived Attempted Martyr’s thematic throughline. Moe explains, “I had an identity crisis, growing up, 9/11 started a lot of xenophobia and Arab hatred and all that kind of shit. I hated being Arabic. I hated Arabs in general, just because people were hating me. Through much of my 20s I felt like, ‘How about I be the character you want me to be?’” Andrew took that crisis and, explains Moe, “ran with it, and made the philosophy behind it, this ‘radical terrorism’, this crazed zealot thing.” To complete the band, Ross, Bret and Dylan soon came onboard. “It’s all a bit serendipitous,” says Andrew. Each of the members were raised in Dearborn, went to the same schools, orbited the same groups of people and crossed paths before eventually meeting each other and coming together as a band.  The reaction has been incredible: the audience they have found are dedicated to investigating the infinite nuances within their attack, especially as the themes have swung to the fore of the culture in the years since they conceived it. “When we started the album, the war in Gaza hadn’t begun yet,” says Andrew. “But the world was still pretty fucked up. It already felt like the car was going off the cliff, with no-one at the wheel. There’s an angst to the album. I’m not religious, but I’ve always been drawn to art and stories about religion – this yearning for transcendence, for an answer, for forgiveness. The album is about someone trying to transcend in some way. This character is reprehensible. But we're not trying to tell anyone what to think. The song wades through despair to find the other side of grief, a hope-filled reminder to push through.  “‘Wilt’ deals with what it sounds like–watching something beautiful in my life die,” bandleader Luke Gonzales explains. “Losing my closest friends, having my view of something that consumed so much of my life splinter and leave, and wondering whether it was hollow all along. Generally, a good representation of the central feeling I was trying to capture on this EP.
