NEW ALBUM ‘EL MIRADOR’ OUT APRIL 8

NORTH AMERICAN SUMMER TOUR DATES ANNOUNCED TODAY

Oscillating between haunting desert noirs and buoyant jolts of cumbia, Calexico recently announced their 10th studio album ‘El Mirador’ and today they are sharing the album track “Harness The Wind”, which features backing vocals from Iron & Wine’s Sam Beam. Listen below.

“Harness The Wind”:
https://youtu.be/isk6Piyfom4

“When we recorded “Harness the Wind” it felt like we tapped into a spark of bright light and positivity,” said singer and Calexico co-founder Joey Burns. “Everything fell together quickly and naturally. With the shiny electric guitar weaving in and out of John and Sergio’s propelling drums and bass, the song always had a vibe that stood out from the other songs. We sent the tracks to Sam Beam to add his vocals on the chorus which made the tune float even more. It’s a song about hope and sharing compassion to fellow travelers and dreamers who are trying to find their way.”

Burns and drummer John Convertino have been performing together for over 30 years, sharing a deep love of jazz and usually building songs on a foundation of bass and drums. But all these years later, Calexico is still breaking new ground. ‘El Mirador’ showcases a sunnier side of the band, cutting through two years of pandemic fog with a blast of danceable optimism. Writing and recording alongside Sergio Mendoza (keys, accordion, percussion), the album expands on long running influences of cumbia, mariachi and the plethora of diaspora sounds flourishing throughout the Southwest.

“I've been playing with Calexico for about 15 years, and I admire Joey and John's constant search for new sounds,” reflects Mendoza, who’s newly built home studio became a refuge for the band and reduced pandemic risks while fostering a more organic creative process. “After so many albums,” he adds, “I'm really proud we were able to achieve something so fresh together.”

El Mirador stands both as a lookout point and beacon in the dark; an opportunity to search inwards, ponder our connections to the Earth and its people, and hopefully illuminate a path forward. After decades on the road Calexico's music remains boundless and romantic, still gazing upon the horizon in search of their next adventure.

Calexico has also announced their North American tour in support of ‘El Mirador’ today which will begin on June 3 in Portland; all upcoming dates are listed below.

Shot on location in London & Brighton, THIS MUCH I KNOW TO BE TRUE captures Nick Cave and Warren Ellis’ exceptional creative relationship as they bring to life the songs from their last two studio albums, Ghosteen (Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds) and Carnage (Nick Cave & Warren Ellis).

In this document of their first ever performances of these albums, filmed in spring 2021 ahead of their UK tour, we see the two, accompanied by singers and string quartet, as they nurture each song into existence. The film features a special appearance by close friend and long-term collaborator, Marianne Faithfull.

Interstitial pieces between the songs illuminate the cosmology and themes of the music. We hear about the process of Nick writing The Red Hand Files—the letters he chooses to answer and the replies themselves – giving us an insight into his current concerns in life and music, and into the method by which he is able to bring his own thoughts and feelings into order. We also visit the workshop where he is creating a series of sculptures depicting the life of the Devil—a portrait of the lives of all of us as we move from innocence to experience, attune to the world and its attendant loss, and eventually confront our own mortality.

THIS MUCH I KNOW TO BE TRUE reaches into the deep friendship and personal relationship between Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, something glimpsed in the 2014 Cave pseudo-documentary, 20,000 Days on Earth. The film will prove to be another significant moment in the journeys of Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, capturing the mood and spirit of the pair as they move through a new, optimistic phase.

Shot in color by Andrew Dominik (Chopper, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Blonde) and with cinematography by Robbie Ryan (The Favourite, Marriage StoryTHIS MUCH I KNOW TO BE TRUE is a companion piece to Dominik’s 2016 film One More Time with Feeling which premiered at the Venice Film festival followed by screenings in 850 cinemas across 30 countries, also distributed by Trafalgar Releasing.

Plastikman & Chilly Gonzalez New Album 'Consumed In Key' Produced by Tiga Set For Release April 1; Lead Single "Contain" Out Today

Chilly Gonzales (left) and Plastikman (Richie Hawtin) (right), photographed by Camille Blake
Turbo Recordings presents its grandest achievement yet with Consumed In Key, a reimagining of Plastikman’s 1998 magnum opus Consumed transformed as a new collaborative composition between original artist Richie Hawtin and sad musical genius Chilly Gonzales. The album will be released on April 1st via Turbo Recordings. The announcement comes today, March 2 with the release of the new single “Contain.”

Listen to Plastikman & Chilly Gonzales new single “Contain” here: https://turborec.lnk.to/consumedinkey

This is the story of an album three decades in the makingbrought into the world by Executive Producer & co-visionary Tiga. In 1998, techno legend Richie Hawtin released the seminal album Consumed under his Plastikman alias on his own Minus label. A masterpiece of restraint, depth, and music as architectural vision, Consumed was profoundly influential, defining the soon-to-emerge minimal movement and counting among its biggest fans creative, cultural icons such as sculptor Anish Kapoor, fashion designer Raf Simons and two decades later entertainer Chilly Gonzales.

After hearing Consumed for the first time shortly after the album’s 20th anniversary, Chilly felt that the record’s loose use of melody and negative space threatened his musical sensibility. Furthermore, the album’s unique timing structure and flow fueled his curiosity and pushed him towards an idea of composing accompanying piano pieces (counterparts) for each of the tracks. It would not be a remix. It would be one composer instinctively reacting to - and finding space within – another composer's already completed work. As an experiment, Chilly completed a series of demos and later mentioned it to his friend Tiga, the Turbo Recordings label boss, who as a Plastikman and Consumed fan urged Chilly to continue and suggested that he reach out to Hawtin.

As Tiga was also a friend of Hawtin, he intuitively stepped in as the conduit between both artists and became a sounding board of ideas, helping to translate the thought processes of two artists coming from distinctly different worlds. They all agreed that Chilly should continue recording his solitaire interpretations and then once finished, Hawtin would come on board to mix the new combined work. This allowed each artist their own space within the project, more of a sonic conversation between them than a conventional collaboration.

Consumed in Key is born of the obsessive love of a timeless work of art, an obsessive fascination untempered by fearful reverence. It is the result of a 30-year cycle of musical evolution and inspiration, a touch of Canadian kismet (all three are from Canada) and artists finding common ground where others would see none.

Now, forget the story. Forget the words. Listen.

Consumed in Key will be available digitally and as a deluxe triple vinyl LP on April 1st, 2022. The artwork is a reinterpretation of the original album’s, flipped to black and white and with the cutout size transposed to the dimensions of a piano key. The vinyl and packaging were made with recycled materials.

Today, internationally-renowned British singer-songwriter Emeli Sandé shares her new track ‘Oxygen’, available to stream and download now via Chrysalis Records. It arrives as the latest taste of Emeli’s upcoming studio album Let’s Say For Instance, to be released May 6. The track, produced by F A L L E N (SAINt JHN, Doja Cat, Summer Walker) showcases a more vulnerable side of the songwriter as a tender ode to a loved one.

Listen to ‘Oxygen’ HERE and watch the lyric video HERE.

Speaking about the track, Emeli reveals, “When it comes to making songs about love, I don't worry about oversharing too much. Even if there's no lyric in it, I think to make the most beautiful and powerful music, you have to let go and be honest. I wrote 'Oxygen' in LA, the sun was shining, and I'd just met this new producer called F A L L E N, who played me the beat. Already, a mood was created; I loved how sparse-yet-deep it is, how it allows those very raw emotions to come forth. In life, I can be quite reserved; Unless I really trust somebody, I'm not going to be super open and tell them how I feel. But with music, it's the complete opposite. I need to just let it all spill out and see what it is. With anything that I'm doing, whether that be making a song or being in love, I just, it needs to be all or nothing, and that’s what I wanted ‘Oxygen’ to be. My family think I'm a little bit extreme sometimes, but I think that whatever you dedicate yourself to, you have to fully go for it.”

Her first release on an independent label, Let’s Say For Instance marks a new era of Emeli’s expansive artistry after a decade on stage and on the airwaves. Exploring new sonic territory through shades of classical, disco, nostalgic R&B and more, it sees Emeli freeing herself from the expectations of others, flexing her holistic skills as a songwriter, producer, and vocalist in new, versatile ways. In her words: “‘an ode to resilience, rebirth, and renewal”. The album features current hit single Brighter Days, alongside previous singles ‘Look What You’ve Done’ and ‘Family’.

In an exclusive conversation with Variety, Emeli shared: “I’m so proud of this album and can’t wait to release it. I’ve felt free to express myself more naturally both lyrically and musically in this album and my wish is that it will be an uplifting experience for each listener and that they will get to know me on a much deeper level.”

THEY HATE CHANGE ANNOUNCE JAGJAGUWAR DEBUT LP + DROP SINGLE & VIDEO

THEY HATE CHANGE ANNOUNCE JAGJAGUWAR DEBUT LP FINALLY, NEW

WATCH THE VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE “FROM THE FLOOR”

SHAME SUPPORT DATES RESCHEDULED FOR AUGUST / SEPTEMBER

Tampa Bay production/rap duo They Hate Change have announced their Jagjaguwar debut Finally, New for May 13th. Truly a post-genre musical landscape Finally, New builds deep connections that transcend outdated distinctions between them, spilling over with the joy of exploration and possibility. Lead single “From The Floor” ft. DJ GAY-Z proves it as Dre (he/him) and Vonne (they/them) organically connect disparate influences using icy UK drum & bass breaks with Miami bass bounce, layering on Dirty-South-mixtape-style raps, and dousing the whole thing in spacy psychedelia worthy of Can. The track arrives with a video. The group explains ““From the Floor” is an ode to Florida car culture, parking lot Electro parties, Miami Bass and Breakbeat Hardcore. We play narrator roles in the video, describing the scene as spectators, admirers, and occasional participants, while our unnamed main character plays it cool behind the wheel, unbothered by the party springing up around his classic Chevy. The sound and look for a modern Florida, for 2022 and beyond.”

‘From The Floor” follows a previous release from the album “1000 Horses” that Fader described “as stitching footwork and jungle influences into something cohesive, confident, and, more importantly, exciting.”

Dre and Vonne first came together in front of the apartment complex where they both lived as teens. Dre had just moved down from Rochester, NY; Vonne was trying to sell him bad weed. It was clear from the start that the two listened to music differently from most people—they’re sonic omnivores, obsessive deep-divers, lovers of rare and radical sounds. Starting as kids trawling the internet for tracks, they’ve been collecting music from around the world and across the decades, amassing a shared sonic knowledge so deep that “encyclopedic” barely begins to cover it—not just the East Coast hip-hop that Dre grew up on, or the hyperlocal bass-music variants like jook (the Gulf Coast’s twerkably raunchy answer to house) and crank (think “Miami bass meets NOLA bounce”) that Vonne grew up on, but also drum ‘n’ bass, Chicago footwork, post-punk, prog, grime, krautrock, emo, and basically any genre on the map. Vonne notes of the album: “With this album, it's really like, okay, you know how you talk about the internet breaking down borders? Here's what that actually sounds like. It's not just a hip-hop record with a couple more weird sounds. You want homegrown DIY? This is a record that was written, produced, and recorded in a 150-square-foot bedroom from the least cool city you could think of.”

Feist's New Music Performance "Multitudes" To Make U.S. Premiere

FEIST’S NEW MUSIC PERFORMANCE “MULTITUDES” TO MAKE U.S. PREMIERE

Image

(March 1, 2022 – Santa Monica, CA) In an unconventional production, Feist invites the audience to reclaim the stage with Multitudes; an intimate performance of new songs. Following its development in Hamburg and subsequent tour in North America in 2021, Multitudes makes its United States premiere this April & May with limited capacity performances in Denver, Los Angeles, Seattle and Stanford. Tickets for Multitudes will go on sale to the general public on Friday, March 4th at 10am local time and can be purchased here. See full list of tour dates below.

The production, developed by Feist with legendary designer Rob Sinclair (David Byrne’s American Utopia, Peter Gabriel, Tame Impala) is an in-the-round performance, with fully immersive surround sound where Feist will be closer than ever to her audience. The circle represents time, life and death, the sun and moon, the earth itself and us all within it.  The circle provides a gentle hospitality for this shared experience.

Conceived during and in response to the pandemic, when stages had to remain empty and communal joy was interrupted, Multitudes offers a joint and safe re-entry to the rarified air of performance; it is both an end and a beginning.

Featuring all new music written and performed by Feist and accompanied by Todd Dahlhoff and Amir Yaghmai, the Canadian artist creates an intimate, radically communal, and topsy-turvy production that muddies the roles between audience and performer, observer and its subject. We are welcomed to sit back and watch, or raise our voices in collective anonymity. Anything goes.

To stay abreast on all developments of Multitudes, please visit listentofeist.com.

Widely recognized as one of the most compelling vocalists and songwriters in her genre, Leslie Feist is an 11-time Juno Award-winning solo artist and founding member of Broken Social Scene. Following the breakout success of her sophomore album Let It Die, she went on to achieve international acclaim with 2007’s The Reminder: a gold-certified release that landed on best-of-the-year lists from outlets like Pitchfork, Spin, and Rolling Stone. Along with earning four Grammy nominations, The Reminder’s success paved the way for Feist’s appearances on such iconic shows as “Saturday Night Live” and “Sesame Street.” Arriving in 2011, her fourth full-length Metals was hailed as the best album of the year by New York Times, and later won the 2012 Polaris Music Prize. In 2017 Feist released her most recent album Pleasure, a critically lauded work accompanied by a storytelling podcast series entitled “Pleasure Studies”, named Podcast of the Year by Apple Podcasts.
