A few years ago, Mike Doughty had an idea: Make a new album with his iconic genre-blending band Soul Coughing, their first since breaking up over 20 years ago. He presented it to the band’s former members, and it didn’t go well. “I got back a hot plate of crazy,” he laughs. Ever the resourceful artist, Doughty made lemonade out of lemons, as well as a whole new band: Ghost of Vroom.

With Ghost of Vroom, Doughty is getting back to his sampling, breakbeat-loving, Tom Waits-meets-hip-hop ways, drawing inspiration from hip-hop legends Das EFX’s dexterous lyricism through loading these songs with dense referentialism that yields new delights with every listen. “Pretty much every lyric of theirs is a reference to something from the ‘70s,” he explains. “So I was like, ‘What if I do this with my kind of references?’” Specifically: ‘80s metal bands, Greek poets, German philosophers—and a whole lot more. “I cannot wait to see the Genius page for this album,” he laughs.

Musically, Ghost of Vroom draws heavily from Doughty’s love of hip-hop and breakbeats — specifically, Scarface Records’ Classic Beats and Breaks compilations, which he rediscovered in recent years. “It’s been at the heart of everything I’ve been doing these last couple of years,” he explains. “They’re sampling bonanzas from the days when no one could make a legal claim to a drum part, so you could sample all the drums you want to and never get sued.” In an especially deft touch, Doughty also wrote a fair amount of the album’s bass lines using GarageBand on his phone: “The only good bass sound was the upright bass sound, so I ended up writing all these upright bass lines—which were pretty central to Soul Coughing, too.” Along with Livingston, legendary Beastie Boys collaborator Mario Caldato worked with the band to achieve their beat-driven, hip-hop-influenced sound: "I was quaking in my shoes working with that guy because I'm such a fan. He's incredible at this sound we were making—the best in the business."

ALISON WONDERLAND SHARES NEW SINGLE “FUCK U LOVE U”

WATCH LYRIC VIDEO HERE

Alison Wonderland FULU Artwork.jpg

Alison Wonderland, one of electronic music’s most adored producer/DJ’s, closes out 2021 with her new single “Fuck U Love U.” The song a masterclass in tension and relief with a tough as nails hook and Alison’s stargazing, fragile vocals more ‘upfront' than ever. Listen HERE and watch the lyric video, which was directed by electropop singer/producer/songwriter ElohimHERE.

Excitement hit fever pitch after Alison teased the track at her multi-night sold out Red Rocks shows and her 80,000 strong performance at Lollapalooza. “Fuck U Love U,” inspired by the sounds of Kanye and Whyte Fang, is a soaring and spiritual track which highlights themes of polarity and duality of man as Alison sings of her journey through the music industry.

Alongside writing, recording, and producing furiously from lockdown, 2020/2021 has been far from a write-off for Alison. She created a five star sanctuary in Animal Crossing, talked paranormal stuff with Loserfruit on Twitch, did a number of acclaimed sets from lockdown eg Digital Mirage + Lollapalooza, continued producing her globally broadcast radio show Radio Wonderland plus started a side hustle as a Youtuber. Earlier this year Alison ventured into the NFT space going live with a fantasy themed NFT project called ‘Wonderquest.’ You can read more about it here.  Alison sold over $3 MILLION AUD in the initial sale and for a period the collection was Top 20 in the world. One of the rare “dragons” originally sold for $350 AUD now sells for over 10K AUD.

ABOUT ALISON WONDERLAND

Since emerging in 2009, Alison Wonderland’s sound has quietly inched towards mainstream ubiquity as the sonic sorceress received the “Highest Female DJ Billing Ever at Coachella,” captured #1 on the Billboard Top Dance/Electronic Albums Chart twice consecutively (debut album ‘Run’ and sophomore album ‘Awake), headlined sold out arenas around the globe plus headlined stages at the biggest festivals in the world, and clocked upwards of 500   million streams.

Grinding it out with regular night club sets around Australia and a series of remixes for everyone from Little Dragon to Justin Bieber, she ignited an international splash in 2015 with the full-length debut, Run. Not only did it reach gold status down under, but it earned a pair of nominations at the ARIA Awards. Arriving with a bang, she made her live introduction stateside at Coachella. Fast forward to 2017, she achieved the “Best New Artist” honor at the first-ever Electronic Dance Music Awards, while her remix of Dua Lipa’s “New Rules” soared to #1 on the Billboard Dance Charts.

Alison’s 2018 sophomore effort, Awake, levelled up every element. She joined forces with an all-star cast of collaborators such as Joel Little [Lorde], Illangelo [The Weeknd], Party Favor [Mad Decent], and longtime cohort Lido. She teamed up with innovators including Chief Keef on “Dreamy Dragon” and Trippie Redd on High.” The record became the multi-talented phenomenon’s second straight #1 bow on the Billboard Top Dance/Electronic Albums Chart as “Church” leapt past the 14 million-mark on Spotify in a few months’ time, leading her to become Billboard Dance’s ‘Breakout Artist of 2018’ and the magazine’s 2019 Dance Issue cover star.

In 2019, between headline slots at festivals around the world, Alison also played her own headline concerts which sold over 100,000 tickets globally – most recently selling out two acclaimed shows at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado (filmed in multi-camera 4K VR) in addition to producing and self-promoting her own worldwide ‘Wonderland Warehouse Project’ tour.

Simultaneously, Alison’s Radio Wonderland show clocked 5 million-plus iTunes downloads as well as broadcasting to over 20 countries and featuring prominently on the Sirius XM channel Diplo’s Revolution.

Icelandic songwriter Arny Margret releases debut single ‘intertwined’, signing to OLI Records

“Haunting vocals backed up by an intimate guitar” – Rolling Stone

“With its icy charms unfolding at a devastating pace, 'intertwined' marks the emergence of a bold new talent” – Clash Magazine

“Arny Margret creates sublime, wistful songs that draw on themes of love and longing in the best tradition of heartfelt roots music” – The Reykjavík Grapevine

Icelandic singer-songwriter Arny Margret is in the process of making her eagerly anticipated arrival with her debut single ‘intertwined’, out via One Little Independent Records now.

Having spent the last few years honing her graceful, emotive acoustics and a lyricism and delivery that defy her age, she appears amongst no small amount of local buzz, fresh from playing Iceland Airwaves ‘Live from Reykjavík’ event alongside the likes of John Grant, Ásgeir and more.

Vivid imagery colours deeply personal writing on ‘intertwined’. Arny recalls sitting in a small dorm-room in Denmark, staring out of its single window overlooking the scenic landscape, and how memories both good and bad flooded over her amidst the solitude. She tells us; “Past experiences kept coming back to me while I was living in Denmark, everything around me was different. It took some time to get used to. The weather somehow always makes a way into my songs, I use my dreams and my memories, words or phrases. And one day I came up with the lyric ‘our pasts are intertwined’ as if you’re connected to someone you don’t want to be connected to”.

Through continuous writing and revaluating, the song developed naturally over a number of weeks. Arny prefers to allow her songs to evolve themselves, intrinsically linked as they are to their surroundings. “It was winter by the time I was adding the final touches, I was back home when I recorded the harmonies, and it came together, music is weird like that”.

Arny Margret is from the Westfjords, a sparsely populated and confined peninsula in north-western Iceland. Born and raised in a small town called Ísafjörður, she attended music school from the age of 6 learning to play the piano and gradually taught herself guitar. Through the few pieces she’s shared, a feeling of isolation resonates, seeping through her dulcet tones and delicate strumming, conjuring images of mountain tops blocking the winter sun and clear, cool ocean stretches.

She cites influence from the likes of Adrianne Lenker, Aldous Harding and fellow Icelander Ásgeir. She’s currently recording her debut album at studio Hljóðriti in Hafnarfjörður and beginning to make her mark globally this year and next with her intimate and affecting live performances.

SEQUEL FILM TO STREAM EXCLUSIVELY ON THE CODA COLLECTION BEGINNING DECEMBER 10TH

FEATURING RARELY SEEN INTERVIEWS & BONUS FOOTAGE WITH TRENT REZNOR, AL JOURGENSEN, GROOVIE MANN AND MORE

WATCH THE OFFICIAL TRAILER HERE

THE CODA COLLECTION PARTNERS WITH HOUSE OF VANS TO PRESENT INTIMATE SCREENING OF “INDUSTRIAL ACCIDENT: THE STORY OF WAX TRAX! RECORDS” WITH LIVE ARTIST COMMENTARY ON DECEMBER 16TH IN CHICAGO, IL
December 1, 2021 (Chicago, IL) Today, The Coda Collection has announced the forthcoming streaming release of "Accidents and Outtakes," the rarely seen bonus film to the acclaimed documentary "Industrial Accident: The Story of Wax Trax! Records,” which tells the story of Jim Nash and Dannie Flesher who in 1978 opened a Chicago record store called Wax Trax!, catering to a community of misfits and turned it into the launching pad for the rise of industrial music. Featuring bonus footage, anecdotes and interviews with Trent ReznorAl JourgensenGroovie Mann and more, this sequel film digs deeper into the label’s history and sheds extra light on the Wax Trax! scene and how it became a global movement. The companion film will be available to stream exclusively via The Coda Collection beginning December 10th, 2021, and an official trailer can be seen now here.

Now home to both "Industrial Accident: The Story of Wax Trax! Records" and this bonus film, as well as exclusive editorial content providing additional context for the era and movement, The Coda Collection is the destination for all things “Wax Trax!”

"This is a story about my dad and his partner, their record store and label,'' says director Julia Nash. "There were so many interviews that went into making 'Industrial Accident' and not all of them would fit into the original documentary. We realized that we had so much other great material that we were able to make a whole second movie. The aesthetic we were going for with the bonus footage is that of an old VHS tape with no label on it. You pop it into the machine and it feels free; like you have a seat in the editing room to see these little stories unfold. I think that there are so many more movies to be made from this one film, and that's how the bonus material came to be. We just had to cherry pick some of our favorites that we felt were important to tell."

On December 16th, 2021, The Coda Collection will be partnering with House of Vans to present an intimate screening of the original film with live artist commentary at the House of Vans in Chicago, IL. During the one-time-only screening, artists Groovie Mann and Chris Connelly along with label staff Andy Wombwell and director Julia Nash will give live commentary about the film and their time with Wax Trax!, followed by an audience Q&A. The entire film and commentary will be streamed live online during the WAX TRAX! Channel 66 show.

To celebrate the upcoming release, The Coda Collection is asking fans everywhere to join in on the walk down memory lane by sharing their Wax Trax! stories & anecdotes on socials while using #WaxTraxStories in their captions for a chance to win a Wax Trax! prize pack. Winners will receive one of three limited edition grand prizes including Coil’s Deluxe 30th Anniversary 4 LP of Love’s Secret DomainFront 242’s special limited 7” box that commemorated the 1984-2014 30th anniversary of band & label and the Cash Grab Edition of the “Industrial Accident: The Story Of Wax Trax! Records” Soundtrack. Complete rules for entry can be found here.
