“Harvey is a cool, calm, plainspoken singer; his true voice has always come through his sense of arrangement, and his ability to render exquisite beauty and apocalyptic clamor with the same brushstroke.” - Pitchfork It has taken 20 years for Mick Harvey to resume his project of translating Serge Gainsbourg’s songs into English, and following June’s release of Volume 3, Delirium Tremens, Mick Harvey has now announced the final in the series, Volume 4, Intoxicated Women, out on November 4, 2016. Intoxicated Women contains many duets and songs written by Gainsbourg, mostly during the 60s, in a period where he was focusing his songwriting on singers such as France Galle, Juliette Greco and most famously, Brigitte Bardot. Here Harvey has enlisted the talents of guest singers Channthy Kak (Cambodian Space Project), Australian singers Xanthe Waite (Terry, Primo), Sophia Brous, Lyndelle-Jayne Spruyt, Jess Ribeiro and the German chanteuse Andrea Schroeder, plus a special appearance by Harvey’s son, Solomon. The album opens with a stunning version of “Je T’aime… (Moi non plus)” – here titled “Ich Liebe Dich… (Ich Dich Auch Nicht)” - rendered in the sexiest German imaginable by the divine Ms. Schroeder and culminates with “Cargo Cult,” the closing track from the classic Melody Nelson album. In between we are treated to a smorgasbord of Gainsbourg gems in English (with a bit of Khmer thrown in). Mick Harvey explains, “After the initial recordings for Delirium Tremens, JP Shilo and I continued investigating the duets and female songs, many of which were unknown to me. So it became a voyage of discovery into quite a lot of material I hadn’t heard before. There are even a couple of songs for which the only versions existing from the 60s are from TV performances Serge gave.” [“The Drowned One” (La Noyée) and “Wolfy Teeth” (Dents de Lait, Dents de Loup)] Work began on what would become Volumes 3 and 4 in late 2015. Recording in Melbourne with J.P. Shilo (with whom Harvey also worked on Rowland S. Howard’s Pop Crimes) and the rest of his Antipodean-based live band, 10 songs were tracked at Birdland Studios. The project then relocated to Berlin where a further 9 songs were recorded with Toby Dammit (The Stooges, Residents) and Bertrand Burgalat (of French label Tricatel), who was the string arranger on the first 2 volumes. The resultant recordings served to whet Harvey’s appetite for more, and work almost immediately continued back in Melbourne in order to have enough material to fill two new volumes. Along with principle musical collaborator, Shilo, and Melbourne based musicians Glenn Lewis and Hugo Cran, Harvey enlisted the aforementioned female singers to help complete this final volume in the series. While one may detect the influence of the nocturnal jungles of Os Mutantes or the lapelled, knee-socked smarts of Belle and Sebastian, they have cobbled together a special kind of mineral all their own worth making room on the Table of Elements for. Earnest, yet sinister; Vampy, but sentimental. The precise recipe that goes into this concoction cannot be revealed, but it is a delightful snow globe of warm, colorful darkness. In 2014, they won a contest for free recording time at Dub Narcotic Studios in Olympia, WA. This resulted in their first single, "Trouble in Paradise," that was later featured in the ABC television series Pretty Little Liars. Not long after that in 2015, their EP Cosmic Dial Tone was released on Los Angeles label Lollipop Records on the heels of a Wes Anderson tribute compilation (American Laundromat Records), to which they contributed a contagiously glad version of "Stephanie Says" by The Velvet Underground. Photo: Don Perry LISTEN/ SHARE: "INHERENTLY LOW" ON SOUNDCLOUD   Cosmetic fearlessly attacks the rough edges between desire, deceit, appearance and reality. The inevitable immersion in the constant news about the U.S. election was a huge influence for lyricist Natalie Hoffmann.  Nots' strenuous tour schedule and long drives pushed her to continuously write down reactions to life - good, bad and evil - along with the constant and "incredibly horrifying" flow of hate mongering and violence taking place. "Inherently Low" was difficult for her to write about, Hoffmann explains, "it deals very much with depression and loss. The chorus describes a feeling of being trapped in your current state of mind, so much so that it begins to feed upon itself and falsely make you believe that you always were and always will be that way. I believe that in many ways this feeling is created and perpetrated by a society that is set up to purposefully keep many people low  - undereducated, unable to be healthy, and just generally depressed at the current state of affairs in the world - in order to benefit a select group who hold the strings, and who will do anything to keep control."     NOTS have arrived at the next level of their attack with a confidence and a music that lays waste to the wasteland without romantic attachment to a thing. Still a wild guitar band, but above and below the guitar, bass and drum pound, Alexandra Eastburn's analog synth blurps melodies and nonsense, teasing squiggles of freedom which defy the false grid of modern life. Cosmetic? Emetic? "Monotone Lust" indeed. Wovenhand announce their forthcoming new album Star Treatment today with a premiere of the first track via Stereogum. Star Treatment will be available on Sargent House worldwide -- excluding Europe, where it will be released by longtime Wovenhand label Glitterhouse Records --  on September 9th. Please see complete dates below. The music of Wovenhand and songwriter/multi-instrumentalist David Eugene Edwards has always had an unparalleled intensity. Edwards' rich, billowing and emotive voice is always the driving force of his music, but it's catapulted by his spellbinding ability to transform instruments that many people might consider mundane relics - be it banjo, accordion, lesser-known folk instruments from around the world, or even an electric guitar - into devices of dark fury and poignant beauty.  From the apocalyptic revivification of antique Americana of Sixteen Horsepower in the 90s to the threadbare balladry of Wovenhand's early releases, Edwards' music has maintained its celestial heaviness as it evolved. But now in its current incarnation, Wovenhand is a band that fully expands that power with exacting and inventive skill. It's a sound so distinctive and compellingly crushing that even the heaviest of metal bands can't match.  Wovenhand's current lineup includes guitarist Chuck French, bassist Neil Keener (both of Planes Mistaken For Stars) and drummer Ordy Garrison, now joined by piano/synth player Matthew Smith (Crime & The City Solution). Star Treatment was recorded at Steve Albini's legendary Electrical Audio in Chicago with engineer Sanford Parker, who also helmed Wovenhand's 2014 album Refractory Obdurate.  While Wovenhand ought to be a familiar name to anyone interested in forward-thinking music, the album title Star Treatment isn't a reference to our celebrity culture obsession. Rather, it's a clever reference to concepts of astrolatry, or humanity's enduring interest in the stars of the night sky. "It's ethereal in its concept," Edwards explains. "There are many layers, as always. I've been paying attention to the stars in the sky and in literature, and it's a theme throughout the album." He adds, "There's more love song style on this in general, which is nice. The idea of what love is and how it's expressed and all these different atmospheres." Star Treatment kicks off full tilt with the anthemic charge of "Come Brave" - the song's galloping four-on-the-floor drums driving churning swells of droning, chiming guitars and organ as Edwards' soaring voice compels us to rise and join the fray. "The Hired Hand" takes a more Western bent with swaggering guitars awash in reverb and a throbbing bass line before the chorus erupts with massive open guitar chords as Edwards howls, "give up your dead." Further, "Crystal Palace" sounds like Eastern European folk driven through a massive wall of amplifiers while a full gospel choir sings just beneath the gurgling surface of guitars. "Crook and Flail" sounds exotic in its twanging acoustic instruments and tabla/dumbec drum pattern. Elsewhere, "Golden Blossom" is a lush and beautifully unabashed love song, strummed out in a simple, catchy melody that builds to crescendo with the chorus refrain, "only you, my love and your light." Today Japanese Breakfast has announced a Fall tour with Porches and shared a live video for "Everybody Wants To Love You," from her critically acclaimed debut album, Psychopomp. The video was shot by Philadelphia collective Out Of Town Films. Psychopomp is out now via Yellow K Records in North America and available for pre-order via Dead Oceans in the rest of the world.
