The New York Times Praises Her New Album’s “Sultry, Folksy Vocals;” W Magazine Calls It “Soaring”

“If Tom Waits and Billie Holiday were to have a style child, singer-songwriter Sophie Auster would be it,” writesVogue, describing the unique blend of power and glamourthat Auster commands. The Deli likens her music to “a cross between Fiona Apple’s righteous rage and Gillian Welch’s homespun folk yarns…” 

While Auster cites these artists as influences for her songwriting, her music is wholly her own. Her latest album, Dogs and Men (June 9, Out Loud Music), has been called “soaring” (W Magazine). The New York Times praises the album’s “songs that meld sultry, folksy vocals with soul- (and teeth-) baring lyrics” and recently premiered the video for the album’s first single, “Bad Manners.” Sophie Auster will play several shows this fall, including a run of West coast dates supporting Coeur de Pirate. Produced by Jared Samuel (Cibo Matto, The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, Plastic Ono Band), and written by Auster, Dogs and Men highlights her visceral vocals and heart-wrenching lyrics. “The title represents the two halves of the album,” says Auster. “The subject matter is split in two. Men represent love and heartache, and dogs the more surreal and dreamy side of the album.”

While stylistically Auster resembled the progeny of music icons Waits and Holiday, in truth she is the daughter of writers Paul Auster and Siri Hustvedt. Yet music has always been her passion, beginning at age 8 when she was a choir soloist. At 18, Auster released her self-titled debut on the French label Naïve. While still attending Sarah Lawrence College, Auster spent her school vacations touring and performing at festivals across Europe and South America, eventually landing her, in 2007, on the cover of Spanish Rolling Stone. She has since appeared in Vogue,New Yorker, Elle, Les InRocks, SPIN, Glamour, Velvet, Paper and was featured as one of W’s rising stars.

The Dead Weather have released the first of four technique and instrument-based videos. This first episode features drummer Jack White demonstrating the details of his drum kit within the context of the band's 2009 debut single, "Hang You From The Heavens." Jack White designed the kit himself and the incredible team at Ludwig Drums attacked the build with vigor, creating a very unique trap kit. The White-directed video concludes with a live drumming performance of "Hang You From The Heavens," with an alternate drum beat to highlight the techniques discussed and showcase the band's inner workings during live performances. The band and Third Man Records will release

three more videos, each highlighting the member's specific instruments and

a different song from the band's career,

including tracks from their forthcoming album  Dodge and Burn.

Diane Coffee Confirms Second LP 'Everybody's A Good Dog' - Sept. 4th Via Western Vinyl

Shaun Fleming – aka Diana Coffee – will release his second full length LP on September 4th via Western Vinyl. ‘Everybody’s A Good Dog’ is the first true realization of Fleming’s Little Shop of Horrors -meets-Aladdin Sane vision, recorded in a proper studio with an assortment of guest artists, horn section, and string ensemble (all firsts for Fleming). The resulting 11 tracks are a sky-scraping sound kaleidoscope, touched with euphoric instrumentation and dark lyricism. Lead cut “Everyday” is streaming now via Stereogum here.

Just as Diane Coffee’s debut LP, 2013’s ‘My Friend Fish,’ was inspired by Fleming’s move from sunny California to New York City, ‘Everybody’s A Good Dog’ took shape after this former Disney child actor and current drummer for Foxygen uprooted again from NYC to the much smaller town of Bloomington, IN - “spontaneous moves have always helped to inspire my writing” he explains. This downsizing provided Fleming with a blank slate to create – “I missed the quiet. I missed having a fire. I missed the color green.”

The songs on ‘Everybody’s A Good Dog’ capture this sense of clarity, channeling the New York Dolls or T-Rex at their strutting-est and Meatloaf at his most theatrical, with shades of Motown-worthy soul. The gentle psychedellia on opener “Spring Breathes” gives way to a pounding prog breakdown, “Mayflower” leads with a monster funk-fueled horn riff, while on “Tams Up” Fleming fronts his own one-man doo-wop group.

‘My Friend Fish’ was met with acclaim from NPR Music, Paste, Consequence of Sound + more. NME called it “a revelation” and Q declared it “superb.”

Following appearances on the main stage of Reading and Leeds, a free hometown show at Amoeba Music Hollywood , and a Tumblr IRL record release event, FIDLAR will kick off an extensive headlining U.S. tour that wraps on Halloween for a two-night hometown stand at the Regent Theater. In November the band will embark on a European tour including a headlining date at London's historic Forum. Produced by Jay Joyce, Too was recorded in Nashville over the span of just two weeks. The 12-song collection of pop-infused garage rock expands on the band's 2013 self-titled album that put them at the forefront of modern punk music. The new album showcases a band that continues to fine-tune its sonic approach while also highlighting a more introspective and revelatory approach to songwriting. It also marks the first time the band has worked with a producer.
