Golden Animals Release New LP

GOLDEN ANIMALS RELEASE HEAR EYE GO THIS WEEK

Golden Animals

"Kicking up dust and a noise typically made from groups of 4 or more; your body moves to Golden Animals' wild tumbleweed twists and turnpike u-turns" - Impose

Brooklyn duo Golden Animals are releasing their sophomore album Hear Eye Go this week on Vinyl, CD, Cassette and Digital formats. Released via The Reverberation Appreciation Society - the label arm of Austin Psych Fest - Hear Eye Go is the follow-up to their 2008 debut Free Your Mind and Win a Pony.  In conjunction with the release, Hear Eye Go premiered in full via Consequence of Sound, praising the album as "most impressive because Eisner's guitar and Beecroft's kit are the only instruments heard... With little more than their own prowess and resolve, Golden Animals capture all their musical and locational influences in succinct bursts of haunting psych-rock."Hear Eye Go is available for streaming/embed in its entirety HERE.

Dividing their time between the extremes of Brooklyn and the California desert since their 2006 inception, longtime friends Tommy Eisner (vocals/guitar) and Linda Beecroft (drums/backing vocals) construct tales of love, friendship and seclusion while keeping their sound simultaneously energetic and meditative. They view their two home bases as complementary influences, shaping their sound equally but very differently.

Golden Animals' commitment to the fruits of their labor is impressive-the band recorded an entire LP in a California cabin, only to scrap it upon finding that limitations on their recording process diminished the power of the tracks. That rigid commitment to their work is readily apparent throughout Hear Eye Go's 10 tracks--they're exactly what they need to be, full of rock and roll energy and devoid of filler.

Despite its full-bodied sound, no bass guitars or organs were used in the record's creation-it's all drums and guitar. Hear Eye Go was recorded by Matt Boynton (MGMT, Kurt Vile) at Vacation Island Recordings, and by the band themselves at their own studio. Joe LaPorta (Foo Fighters, Beach House) mastered the album at The Lodge.

About King Krule:

As King Krule, 18 year old south-east London based singer/producer/songwriter Archy Marshall has quietly and stealthily crafted a reputation for himself as one of the most raw and startling voices of a new generation. With his unexpectedly deep and mournful baritone tracing fissures of disappointment and social disorientation to devastating effect, Marshall has harnessed the inchoate frustration and fury of youth and translated it into a series of brilliant singles released on the likes of True Panther Sounds and Rinse over the past few years.

Now comes 6 Feet Beneath the Moon, his first full-length on XL Recordings/True Panther Sounds, and with it, the much anticipated unveiling of the full scope and scale of Marshall's vision. Over the course of 14 tracks, Marshall's passions and confusions are rubbed raw and laid bare, the only connective tissue throughout it all being one of searing lyrical clarity paired with a confounding musical deftness which utterly belies his tender years. From the opening clarion call of "Easy, Easy" it is abundantly clear that this is a breathtakingly bold and arresting sonic worldview, as his songs, produced by Marshall along with Rodaidh McDonald (The XX, Savages), open up to become a loose knit meditation on regret and discontent, loss of faith and renewal of hope, and optimism in the face of desperation.

Eschewing much of his previously released material, 6 Feet Beneath the Moon firmly yet soundly rejects any notion of contemporary trends or peers to occupy its very own unique place on the music landscape, oscillating gently between the classic 50's soul of Gene Vincent and Elvis Presley to the minimal, avant-garde experimentation of Penguin Café Orchestra, to even the electronic smog and dub textures of Marshall's beloved Rinse FM. This is a record where the nakedly bluesy stomp of the likes of "A Lizard State" and "Easy, Easy" sit effortlessly next to the low-end frequency and shimmering beats of "Neptune Estate" and "Will I Come," after all. It is reflective as much of Marshall's own eclectic tastes as it is of the frenetic pulse and rhythm of the city around him, particularly the rapidly changing south-east areas in which he grew up. There is a genuine grittiness and world weariness ingrained here, as exemplified so succinctly when Marshall sings, "Hate...runs through my blood" on the stunning "Out Getting Ribs," the track which started all the fuss.

Diane Coffee - My Friend Fish

Diane Coffee - My Friend Fish

Street Date, October 29th, 2013, Western Vinyl

Joseph Campbell describes a shaman as "person, male or female, who...has an overwhelming psychological experience that turns him totally inward.  It's a kind of schizophrenic crack-up. The whole unconscious opens up, and the shaman falls into it."  We'll never know the whole truth about what happened when (Foxygen drummer and former Disney child actor) Shaun Fleming moved from the West Coast suburbs to New York, but whatever it was fractured his psyche, opened it up, and gave birth to Diane Coffee.

In 2013, after joining the band Foxygen, Shaun Fleming left the green and golden fields of his hometown of Agoura Hills, CA to become the third roommate in a 700 square-foot, pre-war, closet-free Manhattan apartment.  He was welcomed to The Big Apple by a nasty flu virus that drained the last bit of California sunshine out of the skinny, Macaulay Culken-looking 26-year-old's body.  As he recovered, cabin fever supplanted the flu, and his relentless creative drive took over.  Low on funds and bored out of his mind, he spent the next two weeks alone in his bedroom writing and recording what would become the debut Diane Coffee LP, My Friend Fish.

Despite his limited means (using a pseudo drum kit consisting of a snare, one broken cymbal, and a metal pot, recording parts with an iPhone's voice memo app, playing a detuned guitar rather than a real bass, etc) My Friend Fish sounds fully realized and remarkably polished.  From a Donovan-esque song about Sriracha, to experiments with distortion and garage-rock, to songs like "All The Young Girls" in which he gleefully channels Tom Jones with sex-bomb confidence, on My Friend Fish Fleming's spell-casting powers are in full effect, inspiring panty-tossing glee.  After you finish listening, you'll wonder as you stretch out in bed and enjoy a cigarette, "Who is Fish?"

"Oil City Confidential" DVD

Julien Temple's award-winning doc on
Dr. Feelgood, "Oil City Confidential"
on DVD November 5th
" Oil City is 100% pure below sea level, Canvey Island Noir." - Julien Temple 2009
Julien Temple's Oil City Confidential is the last film in his trilogy on British music of the 1970s. It is a prequel to his landmark films about punk figureheads the Sex Pistols in The Filth & The Fury and Joe Strummer in The Future Is Unwritten.

Rather than being standard 'rockumentaries', Julien uses the music as a prism through which he examines the social and cultural conditions of the times. The films share his characteristic cinematic language - an irreverent and anarchic style of montage of archive and fictive footage, which he pioneered in The Great Rock & Roll Swindle.

The Sex Pistols' and Joe Strummer's roles are well known, but Dr Feelgood, who are the subject of Oil City Confidential, played a vital role in creating those conditions for that cultural explosion and is a story that is as yet untold.

Oil City Confidential is a film noir feature length documentary and about Dr Feelgood; it's the story of four men in cheap suits who crashed out of Canvey Island in the early '70s, sandpapered the face of rock'n'roll and left all that came before a burnt-out ruin, four estuarine John-the-Baptists to Johnny Rotten's anti-Christ.

Cannibalizing the visual flotsam and jetsam of our society, welding into an emotionally engaging and humorous whole, Oil City Confidential sets out to explore this unique time, place and social landscape - all of which was responsible for shaping the identity of the band and which, more than any other, defined the strange cultural vacuum which existed before the coming of punk rock.
