Going Underground: Paul McCartney, the Beatles, and the UK Counterculture

GOING UNDERGROUND
Paul McCartney, the Beatles, and the UK Counter-Culture
Coming to DVD on October 1st

In the mid-1960s the often rigid and colourless British way of life was irrevocably transformed by the emergence of a cultural underground movement. Led by a loose collective of young radicals, they introduced new social, sexual and aesthetic perspectives. Operating out of the heart of London, their various activities, from 'The International Times' - a bi-weekly journal that no hipster could be seen without -  to the psychedelic nightclub UFO, promoted alternative lifestyles and values, and sparked a social revolution.

This film not only traces the history of this underground scene, but also explores its impact on the pre-eminent British group of the era, The Beatles. Although they were well established by the time the movement emerged, Paul McCartney in particular, was closely linked with several of its key players, and through his exposure to cutting edge concepts brought ideas directly from the avant-garde into the mainstream.

Featuring many new interviews with key players from the time including; IT editor and long term friend of Paul McCartney, Barry Miles; founder of IT and UFO club organiser, John 'Hoppy' Hopkins; founder of UFO and Pink Floyd producer , Joe Boyd; Soft Machine drummer, Robert Wyatt; drummer from experimental improvisational collective AMM, Eddie Prevost; proprietor of Indica, the counter-cultural gallery, John Dunbar; Underground scenester, vocalist with The Deviants and IT journalist, Mick Farren; plus author of 'Days in the Life: Voices from the English Underground 1961 - 1971', Jonathon Greene; Beatles expert, Chris Ingham and Mojo jounalist Mark Paytress.

Also includesrare archive footage, photographs from private collections and music from The Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Soft Machine, AMM and others.

Paste Premieres Jake Bellows's "All Right Now" MP3

Paste Premieres Jake Bellows's "All Right Now" MP3
Debut Solo Album New Ocean Out August 6 On Saddle Creek

Paste has premiered Jake Bellows's new MP3 "All Right Now" from his debut solo album
New Ocean out August 6 on Saddle Creek. Paste said, "New Ocean covers a wide spectrum of styles... and, according to Bellows, is about 'relinquishing the fear of death and recognizing that we are all part of the same thing.'" Rolling Stone recently premiered "I Know You" from New Ocean as a Daily Download. The track is also available to post and share via SoundCloud New Ocean was recorded at Omaha's ARC Studios with engineer Ben Brodin (Before the Toast and Tea, Conor Oberst), Ryan Fox (The Good Life), Todd Fink (The Faint), and Heath Koontz (Neva Dinova). New Ocean is now available for pre-order on CD & LP via Saddle Creek and limited edition cassette through Majestic Litter.

Jake Bellows had quit music. Or so he thought.

After fronting Neva Dinova for more than 15 years, which included five full-lengths, a split EP, and countless tours, he packed up his dog and moved from his native Omaha to his girlfriend's hometown of Los Angeles. Two days before he left he recorded 18 demos with musician and engineer Ben Brodin at Brodin's insistence. Once in L.A., Bellows got a job installing sliding-glass doors and sold his Les Paul to buy a Datsun pick-up truck.

Though he had no plans to form a new band, he played the occasional solo show, performed with Whispertown, and continued to write songs. In early 2011, an invitation arrived from Omaha's Film Streams Theater for Jake's old friend Ryan Fox also living on the West Coast, to perform an original live film-score. Fox enlisted Bellows and Brodin to collaborate and the trio began to compose and discuss improvisational ideas over long-distance. Since they were all going to be in Omaha and had a long history of playing in each other's bands, Brodin and Fox nudged Bellows into booking studio time to record some of his dormant songs.

Fox and Bellows drove from LA to Omaha that November. They entered ARC Studios for a feverish recording session, arranging and writing parts on the fly with an impromptu band including Heath Koontz, Todd Fink, Whispertown bandmate Morgan Nagler and other old friends. Committing quickly to intuitive arrangements the band recorded 17 tracks in a little more than a week. They worked remotely on the record throughout that winter and spring, adding overdubs in basements and bedrooms across western North America.

The group reunited in Omaha to debut the new songs at a couple of shows the following June. Excited to release the new material on their own terms the band put out a preview EP on cassette, Help, at the end of 2012. The new music is underpinned by philosophical conviction and shaped by an interest in physics, cosmology and mythology. Bellows returned to music with a renewed sense of the intrinsic value of art and its ability to express the commonality of human experience. His debut full-length, New Ocean, offers a mix tape of different kinds of songs hanging out on one record - love songs that are not necessarily ballads despite their introspective gauziness, with left turns into drunk-in-the-sun bossa nova and blue-eyed-soul ruptured by fuzz guitar. Bellows believes that songs change the fabric of the universe through the very frequencies they emit. As such, the record attempts to create the world he wants to see instead of reflect the world that is.

Strokes Legend Albert Hammond Jr. Shows Noisey His Guitar

Hey Guys and Girls,

VICE love the Strokes and when I say that I'm talking about both the tunes and the guys. I mean back in 2001, VICE and them probably crisscrossed each other a gazillion times from Max Fish to Brownies and all over the LES. What I'm saying is there's history, kinda like VICE and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Fun times. So when Albert Hammond Jr. agreed to be featured on Noisey's Guitar Moves, it felt like having one of your buddies roll thru. In the ninth episode of Guitar Moves, host Matt Sweeney meets Albert Hammond Jr. to discus 90's style riffs, influences, and how to impress your mom. Even though he rocks his guitar strap unusually high, Hammond Jr. gives pointers to guitar players on how to be less cheesy and more badass.

Band To Tour With Passion Pit This Fall

Welsh trio The Joy Formidable are pleased to announce the release of their Silent Treatment EP on all digital outlets tomorrow. The Silent Treatment EP includes 4 tracks, including a new mix of the title track done by William Orbit (Blur, Madonna, Pink), a live version of "Tendons" recorded at London's Roundhouse, and previously unreleased song "All This Promise" from the sessions that produced the band's most recent album, Wolf's Law. For full track listing, please see below.

The band have also released a music video for the EP's title track, directed by the duo ArchEnemies. The video for "Silent Treatment," shot in black and white, features a confident yet vulnerable performance by lead-singer Ritzy Bryan. Watch the video over at RollingStone.com now:

Many critics noted that "Silent Treatment," a centerpiece on the band's acclaimed sophomore album Wolf's Law, was a different direction for the band. Pitchfork noted, "Most Joy Formidable songs start at heart-pumping and turn up the volume from there, but on the delicate "Silent Treatment", Bryan is able to convey that same intensity backed only with an acoustic guitar."

The band will be hitting the road for tour dates with Passion Pit, beginning on September 29 in Charlottesville, VA. The tour will span from coast to coast throughout the entirety of October and the first part of November, including dates in Los Angeles at The Greek Theater on October 25. Glasvegas Video For First Single "If"

"If" Digital EP Available Now
''If' is grand, ragged round the edges, and wiser than you'll ever be...ringing guitars and galloping horse drums...welcome back to 'brilliant'." NME
Glasvegas - If
Glasvegas - If Video
The new video features the legendary William Shatner and is Glasvegas' take on the iconic BBC Music show "The Old Grey Whistle Test."

James Allan, Glasvegas song-writer, guitarist, vocalist, frontman, beloved people's poet (and profound Glaswegian) explains...

"When we played on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson a while back, William Shatner introduced our live performance as he is a fan of the band.  I then thought it would be a cool thing to incorporate his introduction of us into our new video since it also has a 'late show' theme.  We got in touch with him to ask his permission and he got back to us almost immediately to give us the thumbs up!"

Taken from their forthcoming album 'Later...When The TV Turns To Static,' 'If' melds trademark Glasvegas' soaring choruses to a martial drum and Phil Spector inspired opening.  'If' is accompanied on the EP, which is now available on iTunes (http://smarturl.it/GlasvegasIf) by three exclusive recordings from the band. A cover of PJ Harvey's 'The Words That Maketh Murder', 'Press ' a brand new track written especially for the EP by James Allan and a demo version of 'Finished Sympathy' which is the last track on the new album.

"A lot of thought went into the If EP" says James "from the decision about the cover track right down to the wee <> symbols in the 'Press title, which I wanted to make look like a button on a VCR.  The reason for choosing 'The Words That Maketh Murder' was that some of the covers we have done in the past have been older songs, so we wanted to go for something newer.  The PJ Harvey album 'Let England Shake' is a record we had been listening to and it seemed an obvious choice to pick a song from this record. Press is a new song and is me speaking in a hypothetical sense, a 'what if-scenario', and the demo of Finished Sympathy, well it's a bloody good song from the album that we are really proud of, based on my opinion that "sympathy" is something that's finished at too young an age. You can expect heavy fireworks from the album version."

The album 'Later...When The TV Turns To Static' is available for pre-order via the band's website www.glasvegas.net and will be in-stores on September 3rd.

Glasvegas is: James Allan (Vocals, Guitar), Rab Allan (Guitar), Paul Donoghue (Bass), Jonna Löffgren (Drums)

Stay tuned for U.S. touring info.
