Today Guruguru Brain are excited to announce the release of the new album from maya ongaku, Nothing Space Music, out digitally on August 7th and physically on September 9th. The first single from the record “Astral Echoes” is streaming online now.
On the track the band said "'Astral Echoes' explores the moment when art comes into being— when inspiration quietly enters the mind. I believe inspiration is not something to be chased or seized, but something that emerges when we patiently wait for its arrival in silence."

New album, Nothing Space Music, out August 7 via Guruguru Brain, marks the deepest realisation of that vision to date. Written following a period of extensive international touring, the record emerged from a growing desire to reconnect with silence. As audiences grew larger and performances louder, the band found themselves increasingly drawn toward the quiet spaces beneath the noise. What began as a reflection on that internal silence gradually evolved into the concept of “Nothing Space” - not emptiness, but a vast field where boundaries dissolve: between sound and silence, sky and sea, past and future, self and world. The album represents the most fully realised expression of a vision that has guided the band since its formation in the seaside towns surrounding Enoshima, the small island southwest of Tokyo. maya ongaku emerged from a spirit the band describes as 自然発生 (shizen hassei), or "spontaneous occurrence." Through countless hours of living, experimenting, and creating together, the group developed a musical language rooted in curiosity, intuition, and a shared desire to discover something entirely new.
Named after a neologism describing the imagined view beyond one’s field of vision, maya ongaku has always looked toward unseen horizons. Drawing inspiration from the experimental rock of the 1960s and 70s, Japanese folk and psychedelia, avant-garde art movements, literature, philosophy, and cultural anthropology, the trio - Tsutomu Sonoda, Ryota Takano, and Shoei Ikeda - have cultivated a practice that treats music not simply as entertainment, but as a way of exploring relationships between people, nature, sound, and consciousness. To bring the vision of Nothing Space Music to life, maya ongaku built their own recording environment from the ground up. Near a seaside shrine in their hometown, the trio spent months transforming a large soundproof building into what would become Nothing Space Studio. There, working entirely on their own, they recorded, performed, mixed, and designed the album in near-total isolation. Until the record was complete, no one outside the band heard the music.
The result is an album conceived not as a collection of songs but as a single immersive composition. Tracks unfold with patience and openness, inviting listeners into a world where distinctions soften and silence becomes as expressive as sound. “Astral Echoes,” embodies the album’s guiding philosophy, having been repeatedly dismantled and rebuilt as the band searched for the clearest expression of the record’s intent. Created through a process of listening closely to what had been overlooked amid the momentum of recent years, Nothing Space Music reflects maya ongaku's belief that beyond the divisions and boundaries shaping contemporary life lies a deeper space of connection. It is, in the band's view, their most complete work to date - a meditation on presence, perception, and the possibility of rediscovering the world through attentive listening.
