Today, Canadian singer-songwriter Elissa Mielke debuts her ebullient new single “Don’t Have To Hate You,” a contemplative celebration of finding power in letting go; turning away from resentment and towards release. The track pairs a breezy upbeat arrangement with confessional lyrics that trace the long afterlife of a relationship and what happens once anger starts to loosen its grip. Across the track, Mielke moves through sharply observed details and memories that feel both intimate and ordinary: a back porch, a London skylight, a long-held souvenir, a glimpse into someone else’s new life. Rather than revisiting old hurts, “Don’t Have to Hate You” lands somewhere more profound, arriving at the understanding that forgiveness can exist without reconciliation. At its center is the refrain: “forgiveness is a gift & it’s for me not you.” LISTEN HERE: https://ldrecords.lnk.to/DontHaveToHateYou

Mielke shares, “We recorded this song live in upstate New York at Outlier Inn, with sheep walking around outside the window of the studio. The song is a joyful surrender and the recording felt like that too; we all played our parts live in the room with no headphones on, just vibing out and then Haldeman did that wonderful meandering guitar solo at the end. To me this song is saying “look, It's easy to think that clinging to the past is somehow holding the people who hurt us responsible, but it’s really only hurting us.” Time to let go and roll down the windows and finally get to live again!”

Musically, “Don’t Have to Hate You” expands Mielke’s earnest songwriting and piano balladry into warmer and more open terrain. What begins as a winding and breezy song gradually unwinds into a loose and blissful guitar jam that feels more like letting go than tying things up. Co-written with Henry Brill in Nashville while they were both navigating complicated losses, the song also features an epic band: Michael Haldeman (Dijon) on electric guitar, David Lizmi (John Legend) on bass, Sean Mullins on drums, Nuria Graham on synths & electric piano, Adam Brisbin on acoustic guitar, and country steel legend Russ Pahl (Willie Nelson, Elton John, Kacey Musgraves) on pedal steel. Produced, mixed and recorded by Philip Weinrobe at The Outlier Inn in Woodbridge NY with assistant recording engineer Greg Castro and mastered by Josh Bonati.

Mielke first drew attention for her powerful vocals and stripped-back songwriting on her 2021 EP Finally, which earned praise from Pitchfork, who described her voice as “an immense ocean of an instrument” and highlighted the directness and emotional clarity of her writing. Uproxx noted “her ability to pen rich and introspective songs” and Exclaim! crowned her an “Artist To Watch”. Since then, she has continued to develop a body of work that moves between folk, indie rock, and intimate singer-songwriter traditions, balancing vivid lyrical detail with understated arrangements.

Mielke will make a run of live appearances later this year, starting with an appearance next month in Los Angeles and shows this fall in New York, Nashville and Toronto - details below. “Don’t Have to Hate You” is out now and available across all digital platforms via LD Entertainment / Secretly Distribution.
