Today, Josh Da Costa announces his debut solo album 'New Wave Graveyard' for release on Stones Throw on the 24th of July. The announcement comes amidst North American live dates with Drugdealer and is accompanied by new single, "Proving Me Right".

On his debut solo album, he brings together wide-ranging influences, sounds and moods with the same singular vision & flair as one of his much-loved NTS shows. On today's new single, we get an introduction to the glam side to the record, which Josh describes as his "tribute to bands like Japan, Sparks, ELO, Associates, and Cleaners From Venus." He continues, "The chorus melody came to me in the shower one morning and I don’t know why. It's about the type of person who plays the victim because that’s how they get off. Thriving on chaos and confusing as a means of creating passion and intimacy. Drama addicts."

Josh da Costa imagined his solo debut album 'New Wave Graveyard' as a “greatest hits from a parallel universe, classic songs from an alternate reality.” He says, “Instead of trying to home in on one specific vibe or sound, I chose to sort of chameleon my way through my own taste and record collection and try out different approaches to songwriting – as if I were more than just one artist.”

Anyone who’s seen Josh DJ in LA or checked out his NTS show Confusing Mix will be familiar with his curious blends of music – Brussels micro-labels, Flying Nun favourites, and leftfield post-punk – and how they all make sense together. Now, all those influences crystallise into a singular statement.

Josh was a fixture in the 2010s Brooklyn scene, when just about anyone could start a band (and just about everyone did). His group Regal Degal toured with Real Estate and DIIV; after they disbanded, Josh moved to LA, where he shared an old Craftsman with Geneva Jacuzzi, Shags Chamberlain, James Ferraro, and Daryl Johns – a paradise for “freaks and friends”. He formed the duo CMON, releasing a record on Mexican Summer, and played drums in Drugdealer and MGMT.

Then the Craftsman burned down, set alight by a serial arsonist, and the pandemic’s onset meant CMON had to cancel a big tour. Josh’s relationship also came to an end. But it wasn’t all disaster: his friends supported him after the fire, he met someone new, and he had time on his hands to revisit music from his adolescence and “get deep into some of the gear I’d had lying around for years but overlooked.”

Written over several years, 'New Wave Graveyard' was born of that transition period, cut through with humour and populated by the personalities da Costa encountered in LA and New York. Josh was drawn to LA’s “movie magic, bizarre music, sleazy sexy glammy druggy outsiders, and this blown-out bad vibe flipside to the California dream” – which also happens to describe 'New Wave Graveyard' in a nutshell. The new wave graveyard is both a literal place (Josh sometimes drives by his old burned-down house, still vacant) and a vibe, an elegy to forgotten fantasies and faded memories.

Nothing lasts forever, but 'New Wave Graveyard' bottles the feeling of being there, where the magic happened – even if that place is entirely imagined. It’s a celebration of strange people met once but never forgotten, of shows and parties you attended or wished you had, of being young and earnest and a little bit weird. It’s played totally straight but never takes itself too seriously – a mix by turns charming and surprising, but never confusing.

Josh da Costa has been opening for Drugdealer on their US tour and will play at the Fonda Theatre in LA on May 22. Buy tickets here
