(08 April) Chinese American Bear, the Seattle-based duo of Anne Tong and Bryce Barsten, today share new single 'Turn Up The Radio (把收音机开大点)' - a joyful final preview of upcoming album 'Dim Sum & Then Some', out 8th May via Moshi Moshi Records.
Chinese American Bear today also announce new September European tour dates culminating in a show at Oslo Hackney in London on 24th September, after recently sharing details of full North American and European tours, and appearances at The Great Escape, Dot To Dot and London Calling (NL). Full tour date info and tickets can be found HERE.
"We often write these songs that verge on being kids songs, and this is one of them," Barsten explains, speaking on the release of Turn Up The Radio (把收音机开大点)'.
"I love this contrast of it sounding so childish, but then we do things in the production that throw it off from being real 'Kids Music.' 'Turn Up The Radio' is like a kids song for adults, a line we often like to blur. It’s all sunshine and good vibes, a true bop, bubble-gum pop, with a hint of psychedelic sunshine magic."
Tong elaborates: "This was a fun and quick one to write! Since this song has a happy upbeat vibe, we decided that we wanted to list all of our favorite things in the verses that bring us joy, instead of telling a story. It was a little bit inspired by 'My Favorite Things' from 'The Sound of Music.'"
The track follows previously released singles 'Mama (妈妈)', 'No No Yeah Yeah (不不好啊好啊)' and 'All The People (所有人)' which have earned praise and support BBC 6 Music's Lauren Laverne and Nick Grimshaw, Apple Music's Matt Wilkinson, FLOOD, KEXP, The Needle Drop, The Line of Best Fit, Notion and more.
Following the success of their 2024 full-length 'Wah!!!' - new album 'Dim Sum & Then Some' showcases a more musically dense and exploratory vision, marking a sonic evolution for the duo. Delving further into experimental territory while embracing more traditional pop elements than ever before, the album forms a positive and lighthearted collage of the duo’s life together - exploring food, small joys, Chinese-American upbringing, love, and fantasy.
Blending warbling guitars with hints of psychedelia, pop, disco and strings - alongside synth-driven electronics and droney, hypnotic textures - 'Dim Sum & Then Some' reflects the Chinese American Bear ethos: open, curious and lighthearted.
Chinese American Bear's new album 'Dim Sum & Then Some' is out 8th May via Moshi Moshi Records. New single 'Turn Up The Radio (把收音机开大点)' is out now.
