Today, Beatrix releases another taste of her sophomore album with “My Angel.” It’s a stunning, slow-burning Americana moment in which her powerful vocals, affecting songwriting and the assembled band’s chemistry are all on full display. Beatrix is the LA-based orchestral indie rock/ folk / chamber-pop project of Arielle Kasnetz. “My Angel” is yet another reach into the deep recesses of her memory to craft unparalleled storytelling — Stream.
Her sophomore album We Swallowed The Sky will be released on April 24 via Nice Life. The songs are striking and off-kilter, full of surprising melodic turns or boldly arranged instrumentals, and careening from hushed piano numbers to loud full-band blasts. The album’s connecting lyrical thread is Kasnetz returning to a long-gone relationship, allowing its ghost to haunt her former love. This ghost is embodied by the pedal steel that weaves between the past, present and future across the album. Where Kasnetz often feels misunderstood, this record is the most in her own form she has ever felt — Pre-save.
Beatrix dedicates today’s single to everyone she has loved and lost. She shares, “This one was recorded completely live — I played guitar and sang in a booth and the whole band played with me in separate rooms. Right before we hit record, my producer Philip Etherington said, ‘Are you ready? Your whole life has led up to this moment.’”
“I was crying when I heard it back for the first time. The guitar solo Harrison Whitford takes at the end does it for me every time. This was really a synergy of some of my favorite musicians ever all in one room. We didn’t rehearse before this day — they just had a demo of me playing it on guitar and unlike most of the other songs which took meticulous arranging and tweaking, this one felt like lightning in a bottle. We barely touched it and just tried to preserve what really happened in the room for those few minutes.” |
