ABOUT CASHIER: In the current wave of rock bands, Cashier stand out for the deep emotional weight they carry, and the clarity with which they wield it. Since their inception, the Lafayette, Louisiana, four-piece has built a buzz around their underlying heaviness that drives both their ambition and impact, quickly embedding themselves in the national DIY circuit, while remaining true to their Cajun roots.
Sharing stages with genre titans like Dinosaur Jr., Whirr, Nothing, and Narrow Head, Cashier are building a reputation for a massive sound that resonates far beyond their bayou home. Early singles established the band’s ability to unite grunge, shoegaze, post-hardcore, and indie rock heads alike, lacing dissonance with undeniable melodic hooks. Bandleader Kylie Gaspard’s deeply direct vocal delivery cuts through dense riffs, grounding their songs with her gritty, emotional lyrics.
That sound reaches full definition on The Weight, Cashier’s debut EP, which captures the band’s most precise songs yet. Peeling back some layers of dissonance to reveal more vibrant and clear tones, the four-piece adopted a laser-focused approach to songwriting and arrangement that made every chord count. Recorded entirely in their hometown at producer Chad Viator’s home studio, the songs distill themes of desire, insecurity, and disconnection into five tightly wound, melody-driven songs.
In energy-filled songs like “Part Of Me” and “Like I Do”, riffs charge forward with meticulous urgency, carried by driving rhythms that echo the matter-of-factness of ’90s emo. The noise interlude “For I Never Knew You” briefly cuts through the EP’s harmonic momentum, setting the stage for the realizations that bubble to the surface in closers “Same Mistakes” and “The Weight.” Across the EP, Cashier balance force and restraint, allowing Gaspard’s blunt, fiercely heartfelt words to remain the emotional anchor.
Ultimately, Cashier’s search for serenity arrives at a sobering awareness: The Weight is something we all carry, and there’s no turning back once you’ve made your choices in this life. Everyone bears their own baggage, but Cashier give meaning to the shared impulse to set it down, even when you know relief is out of reach.
