"This is lusciously rainbow-hued proggy psychedelia with … plenty of neat-o synth lines and distorted bouncing bass adding a touch of grit to this otherwise stylishly shiny retro-futurist confection."

– Bandcamp Daily, Essential Releases

"With nods to pioneers like Soft Machine, Caravan, and The United States of America, it’s clear that Magic Fig comes from a place of reverence, but the band are playing by their own rules."

– Post Trash, Album of the Week

"blissed ballad of sunlight that highlights the future of great pop"

– Austin Town Hall

"this time the group have gone even bigger—expanding their palette with swirling synths, Mellotron washes, and guitars that jangle one minute and rip the next."

– The Fire Note

San Francisco’s Magic Fig will release their debut full length album Valerian Tea on November 21 via Exploding In Sound Records. The psych-pop supergroup's new collection touches on memory, myth, and melancholy, built from a swirling mass of sonic exploration and instrumentation, which includes piano, synthesizers, glockenspiel, organ, 12-string acoustic and electric guitar. A psych pop Broadcast-esque blend of warmth and detachment, lead single and title-track “Valerian Tea” earned acclaim spanning Post-TrashPunknews.orgNew Commute and more. Today, they reveal album opener Flammarion, taking its name from Camille Flammarion, a  19th-20th century French astronomer and author who was deeply interested in the spiritual and metaphysical realm. The new song is a swirling, dream-like concoction of hazy vocals and noisier musical excursions that glow and shimmer through nearly six-minutes of abandon.

Inna Showalter shares, “I first encountered the Flammarion engraving in a 1970s astrology book and was instantly drawn to the image of a person peeling back the firmament and entering a different universe. Camille Flammarion compiled and published volumes of letters from people relaying their near death experiences, past life recollections, and other encounters that, to him, pointed to the existence of a soul and the continuation of consciousness after death. For some reason every time I listened to the demo for this song I’d hear the name “Flammarion” in my head, and eventually went with it, writing the rest of the words as a sort of letter to him.”

Composed of Inna Showalter (vocals/mellotron), Jon Chaney (keys), Muzzy Moskowitz (guitar), Matthew Ferrara (bass) and Taylor Giffin (drums) the psych-pop supergroup features members of The Umbrellas, Healing Potpourri, Almond Joy, Whitney's Playland, Blades of Joy. Valerian Tea feels like an unlocking, a deep-dive down the rabbit-hole into a world that feels altogether more vivid and flamboyant. It is the sound of a band building a bold new world.
