“What’s In The Water” is the theme for PopCult’s upcoming SCENE: a new docuseries and podcast narrated by the multi-talented Reggie Watts that explores the development of some of the world’s most vibrant cultural scenes, neighborhoods where music, art, architecture, and community provide a haven for creative people of all types. SCENE: begins in Silver Lake in Los Angeles, the epicenter of the city’s alternative music and culture since the 1990s and known worldwide for its architecturally significant homes, independently owned businesses, diverse restaurants, creative environment, and the infamous Piss Bridge that takes concert goers between venues. Silver Lake developed as people of an artistic bent came looking for affordable rents, interesting places to eat, drink and see music, and ultimately came together as a distinct community. SCENE: Silver Lake will dive into the neighborhood’s history, featuring exclusive interviews with the folks who made it happen, examining how a city gets tipped on its side by an influential scene and a one-of-a-kind culture that resonates worldwide. Singer Rae Isla composed and sings the show’s theme song “What's In the Water? and worked with GRAMMY® Award-winning producer, engineer, and mixer Tom Biller (Fiona Apple, Jon Brion, Karen O, Elliott Smith). The song was written specifically for SCENE: based on a tagline by showrunner Dennis Scheyer, Founder/Creative Director of PopCult, posing the question at the center of all successful scenes: “What’s in the water?” The song is being released to radio and DSP’s accompanied by an official music video shot on location in Silver Lake. Later seasons of SCENE: will see new, location-specific versions of the song, as the series travels to different locations across the globe, from Williamsburg, Austin, and East Nashville to Mile End, Shoreditch, Jaffa, and beyond. “While many documentary films have explored facets of a scene—the nightclubs, the bands, indie radio stations—no show has ever explored the overall cultural effect of a scene on a city. With this multimedia approach the concept becomes a scene in and of itself,” says Dennis Scheyer, Creative Director and Showrunner for PopCult.
