PRAISE FOR MARLINS DREAMING:

“Mixing bits of pieces of indie, psychedelic, and surf rock, Marlin’s Dreaming is making the kind of music that’s chilled-out and calming, while incorporating enough flashes of energy to keep you moving.”

“New Zealand group Marlin's Dreaming have something special.”
Clash Magazine

"The honesty of the release only adds to the many layers of what makes Marlin’s Dreaming who they are. If the following tracks are anything like the first, then Quotidian is a record that should be on any music-lover’s radar."

Dunedin Indie Pop outfit Marlin’s Dreaming have released new single "Hello, My Dear" alongside the announcement of new album HIRL dropping later in 2024.

Following on from their folk-accented single Earnestly last month, Marlin’s Dreaming’s new track "Hello, My Dear" dances between softly spoken country verse, towering chorus, and back again with the vocal dynamism of frontman Semisi Ma’ia’i.

“In a way the song and the album is a full circle moment for us. We have left the more angular guitar aesthetic at the door and brought in a fuller, more highly produced sound that we first introduced with Lizard Tears back in 2017,” said Ma’ia’i. Semisi says the song was inspired by his move from his sleepy hometown of Dunedin to the fast paced wiles of Auckland."

“Dunedin will always be home, but there’s an lethargy that comes with staying in a place a long time. After moving to Auckland I wanted to capture the influence that the place I live in has on me,” said Ma’ia’i.

The single is accompanied by a music video directed & produced by Semisi, in which an ascetic artist isolated from the world around him interacts with past and future versions of himself. In what is essentially a 1940s period piece, the gloomy artist occupies a densely built world framed in a gloomy villa, with hints of the mania of Sam Neill in the 1980s horror Possession

"Hello, My Dear" evokes the breathy ballads of Thom Yorke, the power XXX and the lovely vibrato of Blake Mills.

Marlin's Dreaming - "Hello, My Dear"

This latest single also comes with the announcement of a new album HIRL, to be released later this year, after the band’s critically acclaimed 2021 album HastenHIRL is a complex and layered indie pop record that sparkles and shines with a studio pop gusto not seen for some seven years from the band. Notably, it takes the layered and tender songwriting of the previous records and levels up the production to a sparkling studio pop sheen. HIRL marks a turn for Marlin’s Dreaming as they level up their production and embrace a pop mindset.

“Overall this is a happier record. Sure it’s still a bit emo - all of my music is - but it’s probably a tad lighter. Probably because I’m more positive than I was then! Musically this has meant we are no longer afraid of the pop elements; big climaxes, high production value and not being afraid to make it sound flash and not super distorted.”

The album started its journey soon after 2021’s Hasten with Marlin’s Dreaming descending into the familiar territory of laying down tracks for a new record in their home territory of Dunedin. But following the session the band did a total 180, searching for a different sound than attained on previous records.

“While some of the songs on the album keep us tied to that time in Dunedin all living and writing together, we started to find that many of the songs we had didn’t fit within the bubbly, fun pop-ness of the kind of album we wanted to write.”

Listeners can tune in later this year, but in the meantime can appreciate "Hello, My Dear" on a streaming platform near them.

Marlin's Dreaming BIO:

Marlin’s Dreaming is an indie pop band from Dunedin, New Zealand. Combining angular guitars, with dream-pop sensibilities, the band pushes the storied history of the Dunedin Sound made famous by Flying Nun into new and uncharted territory.

Formed in 2017 by longtime friends Semisi Ma’ia’i (Vocals & guitar), Oscar Johns (Bass), Hamish Morgan (Drums) & De Stevens (Guitar), the band found unexpected success with their debut album 'Lizard Tears' (2017) which garnered international acclaim including from COMPLEX who called it an “exciting, intoxicating debut”.

Subsequent releases like 'Talk On/Commic' (2018) and 'Quotidian' (2020) showcased their evolution into angular guitars and angst-driven melodies, earning praise from publications like CLASH, NME & Brooklyn Vegan.

Their introspective 2021 release 'Hasten' was an acoustically driven album exploring themes of post-pandemic life in New Zealand's desolate, rugged south island. They have toured with Parquet Courts, The Chills, Kirin J Callinan & Dope Lemon. Having played sold-out tours across Australia and New Zealand, Marlin's Dreaming continues to push the musical boundaries, heightening guitar pop to a fine art.
