On October 10th 2023, Palestinian-Canadian artist and activist Nemahsis was dropped by her label for being, as they saw it, too outspoken about the unfolding events in Palestine and Israel and a broader conversation around the history of oppression of her people. Like many artists who create dialogue through their art and challenge the status quo, Nemahsis remained strong and did not back down in the face of confrontation from those who were celebrating her powerful and outspoken voice just days before. Her message of love, pride and liberation has stayed consistent and today the lyrical phenomenon returns with her first new music of 2024, the triumphant single “Stick of Gum”, released independently on her own imprint, Verbaithim. “Stick of Gum” was produced by Danny Casio with additional production by Noah “40” Shebib, and mixed by 40 and Jad “OUPSiNG” El Khoury at S.O.T.A Studios, Toronto ON.
Along with the song comes a raw and striking visual shot in and around Nemahsis’ family home, in Jericho, Palestine. Directed and shot by Aram Sabbah, the official video depicts Nemahsis in snapshots of daily life, highlighting simple joys and ordinary beauty that outshine any other narratives built by the outside world. The lyrics speak to an uncompromising and undying love, here contextualized around Nemahsis’ love for her culture, her country and her community. The singer-songwriter shares, “[Stick of Gum] is a love song so rightfully for the video what more can i love than where and who i came from? The entire cast is my family, in our hometown, Jericho. As long as I have a voice, our culture will remain.” |
