Zsela (pronounced ZHAY-la) first introduced herself to the world in 2019 with the arresting single “Noise,” followed by her auspicious 2020 debut EP, Ache Of Victory. Today, she emerges with her first music in almost four years with the release of new single “Fire Excape” and accompanying video.
“It’s punchy for a love song,” says Zsela of the track. “I hope it gives you something to chew on.” Co-produced by Daniel Aged (Frank Ocean, FKA Twigs) and Gabe Wax (Soccer Mommy, Fleet Foxes), “Fire Excape” is a study of romantic infatuation that plays out like a classic quiet storm cut cranked to a high voltage. “I’m falling down / Might you be around? / I’m falling down / Might you hear the sound?” Zsela refrains repeatedly over a shimmering wall of synths, delivered with grandeur as if from a high-rise building.
The visual, directed by Rob Kulisek, is a stunningly stylized editorial indicative of the complexities of the artist and song. Toying with what you see and what you sometimes don’t see, it cracks the fourth wall — while being careful not to break it entirely — playing to the track’s lyrical sentiments.

The 2020 release of Zsela’s Ache of Victory made an immense opening statement, catching the attention of The New York Times, Pitchfork, Vogue, and many more. Built on emotionally raw soundscapes layered over sparse and soft arrangements, Ache of Victory’s five tracks created space to showcase her confident contralto vocals. The EP also laid a foundation for Zsela’s captivating live shows, which led to performances alongside Cat Power, Angel Olsen, Caroline Polachek, and Arooj Aftab.
