Today sees Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds release their eagerly anticipated album Council Skies, on Sour Mash Records. His most varied and accomplished solo body of work to date, Noel’s fourth studio album is a record framed by confidence, risk-taking, surefooted creative freedom, and great emotional depth. You can listen to the album here. Council Skies was recorded at Noel’s own Lone Star Sound Recording Studios in London, with the album’s lusciously orchestrated strings recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios. Produced by Noel with long-time collaborator Paul “Strangeboy” Stacey, the album also features performances from Johnny Marr and remixes from Robert Smith and The Pet Shop Boys. Early reviews are in, with a stellar 5-star rating from The Times, and glowing write ups from the likes of The Independent, Rolling Stone UK and American Songwriter, who hailed the record as a “moving and resonant” entry in Noel’s catalogue. Speaking of the album, Noel says: “It’s going back to the beginning. Daydreaming, looking up at the sky and wondering about what life could be … that’s as true to me now as it was in the early ‘90s. When I was growing up in poverty and unemployment, music took me out of that,” he says. “Top of the Pops on TV transformed your Thursday night into this fantasy world, and that’s what I think music should be. I want my music to be elevating and transforming in some way.” The release of Council Skies will kick start a huge live season for the band beginning with a 26 date USA tour, co-headlining with US alternative rockers Garbage which starts on today coinciding with the album release. The band will then return to the UK in July to play an array of UK outdoor shows and headline festival performances, including a massive homecoming gig at Manchester’s Wythenshawe Park on August Bank Holiday weekend. This is followed by a full UK arena tour throughout December 2023.
